| Song lyrics |
Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.
Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked around and he's gone.
Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked 'round and he's gone.
Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free
Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day ...
Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John.

The lyrics of this song can be viewed as either inane or naive. Who did Abraham free? Well, through his prosecution of the Civil War, slaves in America.
Who did Martin free? Well, nobody; although a strong case can be made that he was instrumental in attaining civil rights for those already nominally free, but facing strong, overwhelming discrimination.
Who did John free? Nobody and he did nothing to advance the freedom of those already free. In fact his unfortunate assasination put Lyndon Johnson into the presidency. Johnson, not Kennedy, was responsible for enactment of the Civil Rights Act.
Bobby Kennedy? Absolutely nobody. He was the benefactor of nepotism at a level that wouldn't be thought of today when his brother John appointed him Attorney General of the USA. He used that and his brother's assasination to become a carpetbagger senator from New York. He then used that spot on his resume to justify his run for the Democratic nomination for president in 1968. His campaign was ended unexpected by an assasin's bullet. Tragic yes, but reason to canonize? No.
This song, Dion, is why your record sales fell decades ago. |
