AboutDoris Day 1922-2019

Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff (born April 3, 1922) is an american singer, actress, and animal welfre advocate known as Doris Day. A vivacious blonde with a wholesome image, Day was one of the most prolific actresses of the 1950s and 1960s. Able to sing, dance, and play comedy and dramatic roles, she has been an all-round star whose personality has permeated many popular and diverse movies.

Doris grew up in a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. She started out a dancer, but at an early age an automobile accident prevented her from furthering a career in dance. She began taking singing more seriously after her accident on October 13, 1937. and her mother got her a vocal coach.

It wasn't too long after that, that she was able to get jobs singing. The band leader Barney Rapp was opening a club and looking for a female vocalist and picked her. He wanted to put her name on the marquee but thought that Kappelhoff was too awkward of a name and they arrived at Day (inspired from the song "Day After Day"). She never really liked the name but after not coming up with anything else Day stuck. She ended up touring and singing with other bands such as Les Brown's singing hits such as "Sentimental Journey". Later she became a film actress and starred in movies such as "Pillow Talk", "The Man Who Knew Too Much", "Lover Come Back", "Send Me No Flowers", "The Glass Bottom Boat". She now has been in 39 movies and recorded near 1,000 songs.

Doris Day's film career declined in the late 1960s due to the changing trends, she turned down the role in the movie "The Graduate" which she found offensive and vulgar. Her final films were Caprice which was a box office flop, and other movies including "The Ballad of Josie", "Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?" and her last film was "With Six You Get Eggroll" released in 1968.

Doris Day was in a TV show "The Doris Day Show" after her husband Martin Melcher died on April 20, 1968 which she discovered she was in debt and didn't like the idea of being on TV but she agreed to it anyways and the show ran for 5 seasons.

In 1971 Doris Day became an animal rights activist after her dog got killed by a car. She later founded a Doris Day Pet Foundation later renamed Doris Day Animal Foundation.

On May 13, 2019, Doris became ill with pneumonia and later died. Her fountain legacy for animal rights continues to this day.
