Singer-songwriter-actor who was described by Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as the best singing cowboy of all time. He began his career in 1926 as a radio singer in Chicago and other Midwestern cities. He moved to Hollywood in 1936 where he played bit and supporting roles. In 1944, he was given his own B-western film series with the PRC studio. He also recorded for various record labels and radio shows. After his film series ended in 1948, Dean focused on music. He recorded for various small labels from the 1950s to the 1990s, and he charted twice on the US C&W charts with his self-penned songs, "One Has My Name (The Other Has My Heart)" (#11, 1948) and "I Dreamed of a Hill-Billy Heaven" (#10, 1955). These along with other songs written by Dean were hits for other country singers. He performed live concerts into his 80s. He was survived by his wife of 68 years, Lorene "Dearest" (née Donnelly), and their son and daughter.
