| last update : 29-07-2008 21:54 |
| Édith Piaf (real name Édith Gassion) was born on December 19, 1915 in Paris, France. Her father was an acrobat & her mother was a singer. After having spent her childhood at her grandmother's house, Édith followed her father in France. At that time, she started singing. At 17, back in Paris, she met her first lover, Louis Dupont & they had a daughter, who died of meningitis in 1935. Édith started her career at the Gerny's, a trendy cabaret. The following year, La Môme recorded her first 10" & played in her first film "La Garçonne" (she played in 10 films).
The woman became Paris' favourite star in music-halls. After World War II, Édith went to New York. She met a French boxer, Marcel Cerdan, & recorded her most famous songs : "La Vie En Rose", "Les Trois Cloches" & "Hymne À L'Amour". Cerdan's death in 1949 shocked her & her life became awful. Taking drugs, she was still successful in the mid-50's. A car accident in 1958 & an exhausting tour caused Édith's fainting in New York in 1959. Ill & drugged, Édith came back on stage in 1961 & married Théophanis Lamboukas, 20 years younger than her, on October 9, 1962. Fed up, she went to the South of France & died on October 10, 1963 in Plascassier. She was 47. Lots of people came to her funeral at Paris' Père-Lachaise cemetery. |
