New Album for Elliot Minor

Elliot Minor have brilliantly filled the gap that pop-rock bands like Busted or McFly left behind. Since they shot to fame in 2008 with their self-titled debut album the band has embarked on a successful tour and felt the pressure to write a new album. Lead singer Alex Davies said himself ‘I had heard about the pressure of a second album on the songwriter and I can assure you it is true, you have all your life to write your first album and months to write your second.’ Nevertheless the band managed to get a new record out and this is what we thought about Solaris.

First track, The Dancer starts off as a softer pop-rock anthem for Elliot Minor and picks up halfway through. The bass line on this one is particularly catchy and is followed by some interesting guitar solo and some violins. We can hear that Alex Davies’ classical background has a bigger impact on this album.

Another example of Davies’s classical influence is sensed on Believe. This one kicks off with some violins, which are reoccuring on Solaris. The chorus is big in the style of Elliot Minor with the main focus being on the guitar, which is played to sound almost like a violin at times.

Title track Solaris sounds a lot like Electric High but is one of the best on the album with its rockier edge. The sound on this one reminds us of Linking Park crossed with some Busted.

Elliot Minor being a pop-rock band we weren’t anticipating the very soft and beautiful piano ballad that is All Along, which has some captivating harmonies.

Highlights on the album include Elliot Minor’s single, Electric High. This track was extremely well picked as a single and does stand out on the album as one of the catchier and more commercial tracks. Coming Home is a welcome surprise. The track is a soft rock ballad and has some great anthemic guitars on it. Another brilliant track on the album is Carry On. The track starts off with some electronically distorted voices and then becomes rockier. The violins and guitar mix perfectly and make this track quite something. Another favourite on Solaris is Shiver, a hit waiting to be unleashed. The song has an incredibly catchy chorus and a brilliant bridge halfway through.

Anyone missing Busted or McFly will be able to make dues with Elliot Minor and even be quite satisfied with what they find. Solaris has a nice collection of pop-rock songs and a few surprises along the way. It is quite apparent that Davies had classical training and eager to incorporate that into Elliot Minor’s genre and sometimes it works and other times it simply doesn’t but considering how young this band is we are able to turn a blind eye and focus on the talent. We think Solaris is a great record and will please any fans of the genre.
