Estelle lands first UK No. 1

 R&B singer Estelle has returned to the UK charts in a big way this week, landing her first No. 1 single with 'American Boy'.
The singer broke through in 2004 with '1980' but has spent several years building her career - and songwriting skills - in America and is now based in New York. Her new single features Kanye West and dislodged Duffy's five-week reign at the top of the charts as 'Mercy' slips to two.
The very talented singer, songwriter, producer and MC – recently moved to New York after signing to John Legend’s Homeschool label distributed via Atlantic Records. At home in the energy of New York, her newly adopted city, she already comes with high praise. Tipped in US music bible Rolling Stone Magazine as One To Watch for 2008, Estelle has the self-determination with a bit of Hip Hop swagger. “There’s more to life than just taking what someone gives you,” says Estelle. It’s a philosophy that has served her well. Her trademark drive was also in full effect when she happened upon Kanye West outside Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles during a fated trip to Los Angeles. She summoned up the courage to approach the star, and request an introduction with Legend. When the two hit it off, she also pushed her label to let her to open for Legend during his European Get Lifted tour, a pairing that would continue for two years, and eventually blossom into the Homeschool deal. Out on March 31st 2008, SHINE is a truly original mix of sounds. Where Senegal meets London and hops the pond. Where funk shimmies up against reggae and R&B.
