Etta James Singer Etta James died of leukemia at 73, today (January 20). Her manager & long-time friend confirmed the news.

Her friend & manager Lupe de Leon confirmed that the singer died. The artist had leukemia, diagnosed in 2010. Her health got worse last year because she also had hepatitis C. She died at 73 years old in a hospital in Riverside, CA, where she had been in a "terrible state" on December 21, 2011. She should have turned 74 on January 25. "It's a big loss for her family, fans & friends all over the world" Lupe de Leon said, adding that "she was a sincere artist who could sing everything. I've been working for more than 30 years with Etta. She was my friend & I will miss her much."

Jamesetta Hawkins was born on January 25, 1938 in Los Angeles, CA. She influenced blues, jazz & also soul in the 50's. She was only 5 years old when she joined a choir, before becoming a "phenomenon" some years later. At that time, she refused to become a singer & listened to doo-wop. In 1950, she changed her mind when her mother took her to San Francisco. In the city, she founded her first band, The Peaches, that she left quickly. One year later, she has been discovered by Johnny Otis who signed her to Modern Records. Her first hit "Wallflower" came out in 1955.

17 albums came out in more than 50 years of career. If you should remember only one of her songs, this is "At Last", her greatest hit. Used in many commercials & films, this song has been covered by Beyoncé to encourage Barack Obama in 2008. More recently, her track "Something's Got A Hold On Me" has been sampled in Avicii's "Levels". It has also been sampled in Flo Rida's "Good Feeling". Etta James was still on top these months...
