Evans Blue New Album Review

 Evans Blue is one of those true rock bands. No compromise, just full blast, honest rock, the way it should be played. A little grungy and quite alternative at times, but always strong.
The opening track Through Your Eyes is a typical opening track. It's pretty good and sets the tone for the album, and the chorus has a pretty cool hook to it, but still it's one of those tracks where you know that the best is yet to come. And on Buried Alive, a track that effortlessly follows the opener, Evans Blue immediately shows they have much more in store than just the opening track. Buried Alive is a very strong alternative rock song that is remarkably well built-up. The chorus is quite catchy and it makes one heck of a rock single if you ask me. The strong melodic rock lines make this one of the best songs on the album.
The slightly more grungy Sick of It is another stellar rock song. Evans Blue doesn't compromise to take a more mainstream approach, they just go full throttle and crank out real rock music. Please notice the strong work on the bass and the well-timed accents placed by the drums. The whole arrangement of the song comes together and Evans Blue is showing themselves from their best side. The production is not superb on The Future In The End but I would love to hear this song live. It's such a high energy, high intensity rock song that it must be a pretty amazing experience to be able to rock out to this one live. And even though the next song's called A Step Back, you can't really say Evans Blue took a step back. If anything, they took a step forward, because it might be the most suitable song for radio on the whole album. A strong melodic rock song with pretty good hooks and a very convincing delivery. It has the words 'Rock Single' written all over it.
The next song, Say It, is another song that is pretty catchy and the guitar riffs are really cool, especially in combination with the whole mood of the song that's filled with a controlled kind of energy and grows on you with each listen.
Who We Are is a more melodic, slightly more progressive song that has excellent guitar work. Also, once again, notice the subtle, yet very important work on the bass. I didn't expect this kind of song from Evans Blue, but I am very, very impressed. Hands down it's the most impressive track on the album. Bulletproof however is a bit of a mediocre song. It's not that it's really that bad, but it lacks imagination, creativity and excitement. It's a little bit a run of the mill rock song.
Evans Blue returns very strongly with I Blame You. The solid hard rock intro and the rawness of the song provide the basis for the band to shine. Even though it's probably the hardest rocking song on the album it still has some catchiness to it and the tempo helps too. Actually ranks as one of the better songs on the album. Excellent guitar work.
The post-grunge Show Me is a little paced down and has a more traditional build-up. Evans Blue keeps it fresh and exciting though and while bands like Creed were highly popular with these kind of songs in the early 2000s, Evans Blue really reaches a higher level than most of the bands from that era. I can hear a little Soundgarden in it sometimes even, and that is meant as a compliment.
The album ends with a slightly chaotic rock song called Can't Go On. The further the song goes, the better it becomes. While it might be a little chaotic, the enthusiasm and energy in the song makes up for it completely. Very nice way to end the album.
Evans Blue delivers a very solid rock album that will open a lot of doors for them. One of the best things they do is that they make no compromises and stay true to what they believe in musically. It's something you can hear and that makes the record much better. |
