Fall Out Boy 'Folie à Deux' Review

12-12-2008 09:50 | 0 reaction(s) | add reaction | add news
Of all the pale and interesting bands sheltering under the Emo umbrella, Fall Out Boy are perhaps the least risible, displaying good-natured liberal attitudes and a wry sense of humour regarding their own position and shortcomings.

The latter saves Folie à Deux from being just another shrill pop-metal plea for our attention, with lines like "I got troubled thoughts, and the self-esteem to match/ What a catch!" and "I must confess, I'm in love with my own sins" deflating the vaunting pomp. They even employ a kind of self-aware Greek chorus, with sly chants of "detox just to re-tox" and "b-b-b-benzedrine" undermining the supposed sobriety of songs such as "Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes" and "20 Dollar Nose Bleed", a jaunty slice of piano pop. The rest of the album traffics in the American pop-rock esperanto – ultimately traceable to Cheap Trick – that blends earnest harmonies with muscular mainstream rock, and which renders Fall Out Boy largely indistinguishable from legions of peers, save for their sense of fun. In places, it's all but impossible to discern whether they're stating what they believe or satirising the self-regarding abjection of adolescence. Perhaps they haven't decided yet.
