When thinking about Fall Out Boy's trio of most recent, most famous and cheapest albums, Take This to Your Grave is possibly the album that is ignored the easiest. It doesn't have the number of instantly recogniseable hits that filled From Under the Cork Tree and lacked the fresh feeling that was present in their newest album, Infinity on High. However, I still hold Take This to your Grave to be my favourite album for a number of reasons.
Firstly, it has the classic hits that a fan of any band would come to expect. Although they are not as frequent as the later albums, songs like Grand Theft Autumn and Saturday should be instantly familiar to fanboys of the Rock genre. Grand Theft Autumn in particular still gets a warm rendition in the pub, when it comes on the jukebox and everybody can sing the chorus.
However, what makes me appreciate Take This to your Grave even more is the number of silent hits that are included on the album. I often find that it is the Fall Out Boy songs that don't get released that actually have the most potential. Take This to your Grave has such a number of hits hidden within its confines that cannot be ignored simply because they are so powerful. My personal favourite is Grenade Jumper, and I can honestly say that this album accomplishes that which few albums are able to - every song is likeable and there aren't any that you feel inclined to skip through.
The beauty of Take This to your Grave is that the album gives the impression of being modest, whereas in fact it is a musical masterpiece. This is raw Fall Out Boy making music before it was essential to produce hits for the masses to enjoy. A lot of people would agree that Fall Out Boy really picked up with the release of Sugar, We're Going Down, but this is personally one of my least favourite FOB songs. I am much more appreciative of the FOB songs that the masses would miss by just watching MTV. The beauty of Take This to your Grave is that whereas Under the Cork Tree is an album for the masses, Take This to your Grave includes everybody. It is an album that it is difficult to not enjoy, whether you consider yourself the largest of Fall Out Boy fans, or the closest you've come to listening to Fall Out Boy is flipping through Dance, Dance on the music channels.
In short, to really appreciate Fall Out Boy, you at least need to give Take This to your Grave a chance. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised. | 0 @ 14-05-2007 22:46 yarid_reyes | 503 posts

I think Arge_101 said it all, and most bands are like that, the most powerfull songs are the ones that havnt been release, and I knew Fall Out Boy thanks to "Sugar, We're Goin Down" and i bought the cd and found a whole new world in it, is amazing when a band can put your feelings into words when you cant. Well thats why i love fall out boy, and well i decided to listen to this album and I noticed that they have evolve in their genre but this songs in " Take This To Your Grave " are better and really powerfull, and is a shame that it didnt have a greater hit because this material is really good. And I agree with Arge_101 SWGD i dislike that song including Dance, Dance because if you contrast it with other songs in the album you'll see a differnce, well imo a huge difference and people like FOB because only those 2 songs, but they dunt really apreciate all this other songs that r so much better, well my point is that those 2 songs may confuse people bout what FOB is. In this album i really like Dead on Arrival and Saturday but all of them r awesome. The best non-album song they have imo is "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" is really good. well, to end this, I love FOB they rock! |
