AboutFormat Brain: is a Dutch rockband. Key members are Guy Maalsté (1976, vocals) and Jacques Joosten (1973, guitar). Guy and Jacques are cousins. Format Brain: was founded in the year 1998 in a time that Guy and Jacques played together on a daily base. Jacques was studying classical guitar at the Maastricht conservatory in those days and Guy was always hanging around, as a part of the interior.
Format Brain: performs both acoustic and amped. If the band plays unplugged versions of their songs it's mostly done in intimate settings with Guy and Jacques only. For amped gigs they use a band.
Format Brain: never officially split up, but life simply got too busy to continue their work as a band. Guy started working as a journalist while Jacques continued his work as a professional guitarist and guitar teacher. 2011 is the year that Format Brain: continues with new songs and hopefully new successes.
Both Guy and Jacques compose, but Jacques clearly takes the lead on this matter. Jacques is considered multitalented. Besides his amazing skills on the lead guitar he plays drums and bass guitar. On most demos, but also on some 'real' recordings, Jacques plays guitar, bass and drums. During performances this of course is not possible.
Format Brain: gigs are mostly spectacular. The band likes to take the audience on a musical trip from sweet acoustic songs to the heavy (often experimental) stuff.
The band has it's own style. Artists/bands like Marillion, former Ozzy guitarist Randy Rhoads, Joe Satriani, Ingwie Malmsteen, Accept, Judas Priest, Queensryche, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Fish and Frank Black influenced the duo during their youth. Mix it all together and you get the half of Format Brain:. The other half comes straight out of their soul.
The name Format Brain: was made up by Guy, as a joke. The DOS-command to erase your computer's hard drive is format C: so Format Brain: is the command to erase your brain. Guy and Jacques see it a bit different though. Listening to Format Brain: will not erase your brain, but lets you get rid of some negative vibes and make room for some musical emotion.
