Skyblaze/ Columbia artist, Goapele Mohlabane from Oakland, CA, possesses a most alluring and powerful voice that defies categorization, injecting poignant words with both soul and substance. The dread-headed beauty who was influenced as equally from Etta James, Nina Simone, Billy Holiday, Bob Marley and Prince as she was by Miriam Makeba, Zulu Spears and Hugh Masekela is introducing herself to the world as an artist, vocalist, musician and non-conformist. For a woman whose name means 'to go forward' in Tswana, the South African language of her grandmother, Goapele lives up to her name. At an early age, Goapele attended the Berkeley Arts Magnet School where she led a pre-teen peer support group. She also became involved in various groups and organizations that combated racism and sexism. It would be these extroverted activities that assisted her singing career as she would also sing at community functions. In high school, Goapele sang in the Oakland Youth Choir and became part of a semi-professional music group called Vocal Motion. Upon high school graduation, she attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where she studied music theory. She also began developing her songwriting skills during her post-secondary education. In the summer of 2001, Goapele was signed to Skyblaze Recordings and completed her debut album. Collaborating with a bevy of musical craftsmen, the Bay Area native's debut effort, Even Closer is the fruit of Goapele's labor and inspiration, a 14-track album she co-wrote and co-produced on both the East and West coasts. She brings a well-needed enigmatic presence to a mundane industry that is devoid of innovative magic and fascination, but thick with semblance. Her signature of throaty moans and nostalgic lyrical poetry evoke all things old yet somehow manages to be refreshingly new. Whether you catch her on MTV or gracing the pages of Vibe and Rolling Stone, she continues to draw in a diverse range of fans from Shaquille O'Neill to Prince.
Also, her long-anticipated sophomore effort, Change It All, will drop on December 27, 2005.
