| Song lyrics |
And even though the moment passed me by
I still can't turn away
'Cause all the dreams you never thought you'd lose
Got tossed along the way
And letters that you never meant to send
Get lost or thrown away
And now we're grown up orphans
That never knew their names
We don't belong to no one
That's a shame
But if you could hide beside me
Maybe for a while
And I won't tell no one your name
And I won't tell 'em your name
Scars are souvenirs you never lose
The past is never far
Did you lose yourself somewhere out there
Did you get to be a star
And don't it make you sad to know that life
Is more than who we are
You grew up way too fast
And now there's nothing to believe
And reruns all become our history
A tired song keeps playing on a tired radio
And I won't tell no one your name
And I won't tell 'em your name
I won't tell 'em your name
Mmm, mmm, mmm
I won't tell 'em your name...
Mmmmmm
I think about you all the time
But I don't need the same
It's lonely where you are come back down
And I won't tell 'em your name

| this is one of my all time favorite songs.
personally, i think "name" is about someone who lost a friend. a friend who went through hard times. they're saying "scars are souvenirs you never lose" probably meaning that both had a hard childhood because of how he says "now we're grown up orphans that never knew their names, we dont belong to no-one thats a shame"
also, where he says "you grew up way too fast and now theres nothin to believe" could mean something about the kid trying to get out of their house or town, and move on to try and forget about what they've been through. but somehow, at the end, the person dies, either by suicide or just an accident. because he sings "i think about you all the time, but i dont need the same. its lonely where you are come back down, and i wont tell 'em your name" i think that has to do with one person loving another one, and now they're gone, so they want them to come back. but if they come back, they'll be sure not to tell anyone that its them...
idk, i love this song though. its really powerful...
i'd like to know anyone else's views on it...

| this is a def a good 90's pop song. the lyrics are intense- i think its just about growing up, letting go but not forgetting about what you've been through and who you've made connections with. I dunno. a good friend played this song for me the other day- hearing it aucostically really makes the sound that much more beautiful | 23-06-2004 04:04 sunrae9 | 299 posts

| hm.. i disagree... i wouldnt call goo goo dolls pop, because pop sucks! i think they're considered adult alternative...but anyway they're really good.. and john rheznik... (i cant spell his last name) has a beautiful voice... | 01-07-2004 23:07 dazza_trotter | 108 posts

i heard this was written just after reznik's parents died, (or his, dad? not sure) and so it could be a bit about that, you know?
like, they died, but the "letters that you never meant to send, lost and thrown away" cos they weren't there to look at them or re-read them or whatever.
the bits inbetween the verses are like, maybe highlighting what its like now that john's parents have gone, "now we're grown up orphans...don't belong to no one..."
i love this song so much!! especially the last verse, reminds me of something.. made me cry first time i heard it!

Name has been my favorite song since I first heard it 4 years ago. I saw a commercial for a 90's music CD and saw a glimpse of the song and video, so I burned a CD with the song on it and listened to it right after. It took me an hour to get through the whole thing, because i loved every second of it, and wouldnt stop rewinding to hear some part of it again. Everything about it is awesome, from the melody at the start to the lyrics at the end. THIS SONG RULES.

| I think this song is brilliant...I don't know why but it really hits a nerve somewhere and i go all tingly just thinking about who it was written for...shows rznik was close to whoever this is written about....i'd have said a childhood friend rather than parents but death does strange things to people! I think it is really great anyway. | 27-10-2004 22:42 hershey15 | 143 posts

| i agree with the second answer, from the guy with the name i can't remember.
I think "even though the moment passed me by, i still can't turn away" means that his friend died, but he can't stop thinking about it and picturing it in his head. "all the dreams you never thought you'd lose, got tossed along the way" i think means that the person had dreams, but he gave up on them somewhere because of something that must've happened, or maybe they were just slowly forgotton. "you could hide beside me, maybe for a while" means they could come back from wherever they are, and stay with them for a while. "the past is never far" means that they are both living in the bad memories, because they can remember them because they never lost their scars. "did you get to be a star" refers the the aforementioned dreams that got tossed along the way. "don't it make you sad to know that life is more than who we are" means that it's sad knowing that there's a whole world out there, and you're somehow separate from it all.
"reruns all become our history. a tired song keeps playing on a tired radio" means that nothing ever changes for them, until his friend dies, then it changes, and goes back to normal after a while for everyone else, but he still can't stop thinking about it, it's different for him.
I think about you all the time, but i don't need the same. it's lonely where you are, come back down, and i won't tell 'em your name
I've devoted the last 45 minutes of my life to thinking about this song, now i think i might cry.

Goo Goo Dolls rock in general, this song makes them kick ass even more. This song has a lot of emotion to it. Makes me think of all the people I've lost in my life. but at the same time it makes me think of all the good times I had with those same people. | 01-02-2005 21:54 aLkaLine_tri0 | 17 posts

One of my all time favorites!!
It always finds a way into my head when I'm sad... but I love it so much!
I think the interpretation about it being about a friend that has died is def a good one. I always thought of it as a song about someone that you loved, but they left you, and you find yourself missing them. I guess that fits with the lost friend motiff... Either way, es excellente! |
