Good Charlotte’s lead guitarist Benji Madden confessed that he wanted to move to Australia once he married his Aussie fiancé, former Popstar winner and now Hollywood hopeful Sophie Monk. His twin brother Joel confessed that the child his fiancé Nicole Richie was carrying was going to be called Perth, no matter the sex. They both confessed to loving this Perth audience more than any other they’d played to on their national tour, but there was one admission that didn’t actually sound like half-baked patter.
Ninety minutes into a two hour set, Joel spoke once more of how much he loved this capacity crowd and appreciated their enthusiasm even when “we are playing like s**t tonight.” It may have been a slight exaggeration, but it was true. And the kids screamed just as loudly on hearing this statement as they did when Benji declared that he wanted to become Prime Minister of Australia and ban homework and compulsory bathing.
With an audience that primed to have a great time, it should have been brilliant.
Why it wasn’t was difficult to put a finger on. The front men injected plenty of energy, and they have enough more than decent songs to maintain interest for even a casual observer, yet until Joel ‘fessed up this show could not build momentum. All the hits, reaching right back to Little Things, The Motivation Proclamation, Predictable, The Anthem and Girls & Boys were delivered and sounded fine, though somewhat stiff. The heavily tattooed Madden brothers, who could spend a little time on working up their schtick so that it has a point, are likeable enough but each time they spoke at any length the show totally ground to a halt. Eleven years into a career – one of the most popular t-shirts on sale at the merchandise stand declared ‘Good Charlotte - great since 1996’ - it’d be reasonable to expect such bugs would have been ironed out.
Maybe it was the fact bassist Paul Thomas was having to play in a flower-festooned office chair after breaking his ankle in Brisbane. Maybe it was that this was the end of the tour. Maybe it was that the set-list simply needed reordering because after Joel came clean things did improve considerably. The River was given a powerhouse performance that found the band members smiling at one another at its completion. All Black and Dance Floor Anthem, two synth-drenched songs from their latest album "Good Morning Revival", followed. Both were stripped back to show the band’s pop punk origins and sounded all the better for it. The home stretch consisted of I Just Wanna Live and an extended Lifetsyles Of The Rich & Famous ensured they finished on a high note and gave a hint to just what might have been. |
