Song lyrics
Once upon a time at the foot of a great mountain,
there was a town where the people known as Happyfolk lived,
their very existence a mystery to the rest of the world,
obscured as it was by great clouds.
Here they played out their peaceful lives,
innocent of the litany of excess and violence that was growing in the world below.
To live in harmony with the spirit of the mountain called Monkey was enough.
Then one day Strangefolk arrived in the town.
They came in camouflage,
hidden behind dark glasses, but no one noticed them: they only saw shadows.
You see, without the Truth of the Eyes, the Happyfolk were blind.

Falling out of aeroplanes and hiding out in holes
Waiting for the sunset to come, people going home
Jump back from behind them and shoot them in the head
Now everybody dancing the dance of the dead,
the dance of the dead,
the dance of the dead

In time, Strangefolk found their way into the high reaches of the mountain,
and it was there that they found the caves of unimaginable Sincerity and Beauty.
By chance, they stumbled upon the Place Where All Good Souls Come to Rest.
The Strangefolk, they coveted the jewels in these caves above all things,
and soon they began to mine the mountain, its rich seam fueling the chaos of their own world.
Meanwhile, down in the town, the Happyfolk slept restlessly,
their dreams invaded by shadowy figures digging away at their souls.
Every day, people would wake and stare at the mountain.
Why was it bringing darkness into their lives?
And as the Strangefolk mined deeper and deeper into the mountain,
holes began to appear,
bringing with them a cold and bitter wind that chilled the very soul of them up.
For the first time,
the Happyfolk felt fearful for they knew that soon the Monkey would soon stir from its deep sleep.
And then came a sound.
Distant first, it grew into castrophany so immense it could be heard far away in space.
There were no screams.
There was no time.
The mountain called Monkey had spoken.
There was only fire.
And then, nothing.

O little town in U.S.A, your time has come to see
There's nothing you believe you want
But where were you when it all came down on me?
Did you call me now?

There were no screams

And then...

Nothing.

Dennis Hopper did the whole story in this song, and what a way to pull it off. The backround beat was fantastic, the lyrics were just...Amazing. Also, 2D's 'Dance of the Dead' line is unforgettable.

I know that this isn't what Gorillaz hope for, but to me...Well, this is my favorite song on the album. I'm a die-hard Gorillaz fan, have been since I saw the first video, and I can tell ya'.

When Gorillaz feels like making a killer song, they can make a killer song.

the town unaware of what is happening to them below live happy until the strange folk come and corrupt them . moral is to not blind yourself from the truth... reality is a hard thing to face. but only when you do know it, can you do something about it.

this song is the single most important song on the album the whole album is connected to this one song the story of the happy folk ok follow this
the happyfolk get wiped out which leads to dont get lost in heaven because all of them die and go to heaven then that leads to demon day which is about giving some people a second chance which then leads to all alone because only four or five come back which also leads into every planet we reach is dead also last living souls...its a strech i know but u gotta think about it
ok now dirty harry is "all i do is dance" ok at first its upbeat and then it hits a sad and gloomy section of the song well in FCOOTMH it refers to dance of the dead...well if everyone is dying then all they would be doing is dancing...but the upbeat and happy parts of the song represent the time before the strange folk arrive and the time when the people are given a second chance
-now feel good inc this represents time before the strange folk arrive everyone is happy and living fine they feel good
-kids with guns-ok this one isnt that hard "kids with guns are taking over" obviously the kids with guns are the strange folk
-el manana-in this it talks about a vision "i saw that day lost my mind" this is a vision of the end of it all this is when the spirit of monkey is corrupted and their dreams are haunted so they see things like this also "dont stop the buck when it come its the dawn youll see" this is saying the end of the world is coming but the end of this world is the dawn of a new one
-im still working on the finer details but my friend and i kind of put this whole "FCOOTMH" theory together

You might be overanalyzing, ne? But who am I to judge. Interesting theory. Anyway, I love this song. It's simply amazing.

I love this song. The story's sad.
I didn't think the song was totally, "The world is over". I think it was more about how greedy people are, and greed will lead to destruction.

....Or does everyone know that already and I'm just pointing out the obvious? I

It's okay, but it's scary. I'm nineteen and I can't even play it when I'm trying to sleep... It's also confusing... My girlfriend just said "You can make me listen to it forty times, and you can make me read the lyrics forty times, but I STILL WON'T UNDERSTAND IT!!!" and I agree... And how is it that all the songs are related? It can't be... How about White Light? That's on the CD, but it has nothing to do with FCOOAMH. None of them do, save Don't Get Lost In Heaven. It's creepy, I feel like I'm being watched after I listen to it. And that one line... "The Mountain Called Monkey had spoken-" WHAT???? How did it speak? How does the Mountain have a soul? It makes no sense. I'm confused...

Oh and I found out that Dirty Harry is about Clint Eastwood, so that has nothing to do with the Dance of the Dead. El Manana means 'the morning' so I have a hunch that it may be about the end of the world. White Light is about alchohol so don't get me started, as well as DARE, it has nothing to do with FCOOAMH. November Has Come, same deal as DARE and White Light. All Alone has a completely different story, no doubt. Demon Days is about Satan, no doubt. Kids With Guns, that's easy as pie, it's about the violence in the world. Every Planet We Reach is Dead, nothing to do with FCOOAMH because the Mountain Called Monkey is on Earth. Now Last Living Souls is about how much violence and hate there is on Earth too. O Green World is about how much industry is a problem. Feel Good Inc is about a recording studio in the clouds. I rest my case.

Laeg_Golas, I disagree with you. Dirty Harry is also about war, apparently. I'm not sure, but I think November has Come is sort of about fakes. I don't know why, but I just get that message. The album art of kids in halloween costumes does help a little.
Demon Days isn't about satan. I think it's about how hard life is, but not to give up or something. I can't describe meanings too well.. O Green World can be about industrial problems, but it also seems to be about leaving things behind. Feel Good Inc isn't about a recording studio in the clouds. The video, sure, it's based around the Feel Good Inc tower, but the video's about, basically, as Noodle says for the dvd commentary, 2-D is trapped and she's trying to wake him up from a nightmare, but something's holding him back in the tower. The song itsself seems to be partly a love song because of the chours, and I guess the song's about..Like...I can't explain it..I'll post later if I can figure out my meaning..

Yo, Laeg_Golas just happens to be my boyfriend, and he knows what he's talking about. Damn, you guys know nothing. He's right, Clint Eastwood played a character called Dirty Harry. Duhhh. It was in the 1970s. HIS theories are correct, except that for Feel Good Inc., 2D says it's about how you get trapped in the things you make up and how hard it is to get out of them. Jeez, the rest of you don't know shit. Get your facts right.

Gmork, you shouldn't belive everything your boyfriend says. About the whole FCOOAMH connection theory, i did a little research and found out that Demon Days was actually supposed to be a movie but it was doomed financially. so basically, FCOOTMH and the related songs are the "storyline" to the orignal movie.

....i looove playing detective

also, Laeg_Golas, when they say that the mountian called monkey has spoken, its a metaphor for when the mountian called monkey erupts (we all know that the mountian called monkey is a volcano, right?) and destroys everything because the world is too curroupt.

I belive this song gets wrapped in a nutshell if u go by these words "Gread will unlock your worst fears" At the end when it says Oh little town of usa... bla bla bla... i belive this means how Usa is taking away from inncent people such as arabs they are not all part of the taliban.... And lets pretend the gems are the oil stocks iraq had.... Things are better left unstired... The strange people dug firther and further into the mountain then holes began to appear ... bringing with them a cold and bitter wind that chilled the very soul of them up.... i feel this part means when all of the good things are gone all there is left is destruction and bad things like if u eat all the good bread from the middle of the sandwich all thats left are crusts or the cold bitter winds of the mountain.... and we all do know monkey the mountain is a volcanoe at the end how monkey has spoken is when it errupts from to much corruption... besides the meaning this song is great A+++
