Song lyrics
Thought I ran into you down on the street
Then it turned out to only be a dream
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
I remember the face
But I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been

Seems that she disappeared without a trace
Did she ever marry old what's his face?
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and then I took a different path
I remember the face
But I can't recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been

Remember, whatever
It seems like forever ago
Remember, whatever
It seems like forever ago
The regrets are useless in my mind
She's in my head
(I must confess)
The regrets are useless in my mind
She's in my head
From so long ago

(Go, Go, Go, Go..)

(Go, Go, Go, Go..)

And in the darkest nights
If my memory serves me right
I'll never turn back time

Forgetting you, but not the time

i agree with tom morello, thats exactly how i felt when i heard it. so epic in a beautiful way, really conveys exactly what the charector of the album felt when he looks back on his adventure, and all the regrets... excellent. i knew they had it in them. since the first time i heard dookie, when iw as 9, i knew that this band was something special, and was going to accomplish something great. this is that achievement. the whole american idiot album... and whatshername is the pinnacle of that achievement.

she's a character in the story which the album tells. she's the punk anarchist girl who Jesus of Suburbia meets. by the time he gets home, he cant remember her name- "i remember the face but i cant recall the name" - hence "whatsername"

"Green Day" is slang for a day where all you do is smoke pot and chill out, and the story of the album....god i must have explained it at least 10 times on here....
Jesus of Suburbia, an average everyday normal kid becomes disillusioned with the people and places around him, so he leaves home and goes to live in the city. There he makes the new alterego of St Jimmy, a violent drug-dealing criminal. He meets an anarchist punk girl, who is called Whatsername because he can't remember what her name was (probably cos of the drugs), who he falls in love with. However, even his life as Jimmy gets too boring for her, and she leaves him. After the destruction/ "death" of the Jimmy personality, Jesus returns home and thinks about everything that happened.
hope that helps

You shouldn't say a song sucks just because it's long. I mean, you think when Freddie Mercury(singer of Queen) wrote "Bohemian Rhapsody" he was thinking "Damn. That's too long. Maybe I'll stop here." NOOO! And don't tell me you don't like "Bohemian Rhapsody" because everyone likes it. Okay, maybe not EVERYONE, but a majority of the people. Freddie Mercury kept going because that's how he felt. Billie Joe once told Mike and Tre that he had a secret, not very punk ambition: to write the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' of the future." And I honestly think they've accomplished that more than once on this album. Great job.
