Hanson themselves said back in September 2000:
Beautiful Eyes was originally a love song that changed very quickly into a very sad song about a man losing his wife and the fact that he sees his wife in his daughter's eyes, and how much he misses her. You get ideas out of thin air. I don't think songwriters really know where they come from.
