I'm sure a bunch of people love this song but are embarassed by (ahem) who sings it. But the lyrics are amazing! I can't imagine what he was thinking when he wrote the song (or the songwriters, whatever).

4 posts	A completely amazing song!!!! It really shows the depth of Darius' voice. Everyone who has been in a difficult relationship can relate to this song. He wants to leave but then again he doesn't. He would do anything for her that he could, but there is nothing he can do. If she wants to leave, he would let her go. But whatever the outcome, he just wants her to be happy. Wow!!

After reading an old interview where Rucker states that this song is about a relationship he once had but reversed the rolls I decided to check it out more. The lyrics alone are incredible. I think he could just read them out loud and still get the same effect. As a songwriter myself I know how hard it is to get an emotional response from lyrics. I also like to leave my lyrics vague enough to give the listener a chance to let the story be what he/she wants. So throwing Rucker's statement out the window.. here's my take on the song. Again this is not what the songwriter says or thinks, this is just MY interpretation. The song starts with the girl in a daze claiming that she loves her father, and M. Stipe. But those aren't romantic loves and by not saying she loves the singer it shows that she doesn't have the same feeling as he does. This is also shown in the second verse when she goes out and comes home drunk but didn't include him in her night out. At this point he realizes it's a dead end but he doesn't have the strength to leave the relationship. The chorus has the singer in a kind of "I don't care" attitude. Let her cry, let her sing.. let her do whatever i don't care. We've all been there. But then the last two lines show that he can't stop caring. Basically, if she's ok tomorrow.. leave her alone. As if asking God not to let her hurt herself anymore. Then she leaves him. He wants to go find her but on the other hand is relieved that she is gone, because he didn't have the strength to leave her. Unfortunately, she comes back and he realizes that no matter what he can't leave her because he loves her way too much even if she doesn't love him. Then the chorus again. The last verse is where i think I really deviate from the songwriter's intention. I like to think of it as a totally new woman years later. He finally is done with the girl from the beginning of the song and is with his new love and things aren't working out so he's leaving but again finds he lacks the strength. And then realizes as she's off to get high, that she is the same type of person. And that he is stuck in the same situation that he doesn't know how to get out of. will she leave, will she die, will he have the strength to leave this time? Will somebody help him out of this? He doesn't know the answers. His cry to "mama" is like a child throwing up his hands not knowing what to do and seeking the comfort of someone who views as having all the answers. again the chorus.. even though he wants it to be over he still loves her and won't leave her.
