"All I need in this life of sin/Is me and my girlfriend!" Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt happily sing together on their latest track, which snatches its lyrics from the chorus of Tupac Shakur's 1996 track "Me and My Girlfriend" (which was, in turn, re-imagined by Jay-Z and Beyonce on their single "'03 Bonnie & Clyde"). Like "I Love It," "Girlfriend" features a driving beat and ebullient harmonizing; unlike "I Love It," the duo is much less pissed-off on this track, which serves as a re-affirmation of friendship. A rep for Icona Pop confirms that "I Love It" -- which was released overseas over a year ago -- is still the group's current single in the U.S., but that "Girlfriend" is a single for Europe and other international areas. So, the new cut is not a stateside follow-up (yet), but "Girlfriend" signals the impending release of Icona Pop's debut album, which the girls described as "almost done" in a Billboard interview last February. "We've worked with hip-hop artists like Zebra Katz, and also Stargate, Benny Blanco and Shellback," said Jawo of the album on the Cambio blue carpet of the Billboard Music Awards last month. "It's gonna be out before the end of the summer." |
