Jack's Mannequin Something Corporate's Andrew McMahon returns with the third album under the Jack's Mannequin moniker. The quartet's piano rock sound is slickly polished to an adult-contemporary sheen here, leading to an album of mixed results. While the syrupy mash of swelled-up "Casting Lines" feels like a sequel to Augustana's "Boston", McMahon shines on cathartic "Television", with the nimble bass and synth groove working brilliantly with his pleading vocals.

Filler like the country-kissed swagger of "Hostage" and cascading dance of piano and light acoustic shimmer on "Amelia Jean" drift by unnoticed, while the glistening guitar shimmer sprinkled over the heavy beat of "People Running" simply ends up feeling a bit ordinary. Clunky vocal phrasing derails swaying piano rocker "Platform Fire", wasting some great songwriting, "I'm a man on a wire / You're here for the view".

There are points where the album works exceedingly well, with the fantastic "My Racing Thoughts" standing out from the pack with its energetic hook and excellent songwriting, "She's a black cat hanging round my doorstep / I'll need all day tomorrow to recover from today". Emotional "Hey Hey Hey (We're All Gonna Die)" and the stuttering beat of "Amy, I", using winter as a metaphor for an icy lover, make up for the pieces that fall a bit short. The stabbing piano jangling under jabbing guitar creates a cool eighties pop-rock vibe on, his plea to break free of a relationship, "Release Me", while the sweet male/female harmony pushing through flickering acoustic love song "Restless Dream" makes for a great look at a relationship that could have been.

Ultimately, the latest effort from Jack's Mannequin has good intentions, but comes off a bit too safe at points. While the overproduced luster of the album weighs down some potentially solid tunes, the effort is still worth a listen for what does work well here.
