| On October 30, the prestigious Mercury Prize, for this year's best British album, has been awarded in London. Overgrown, by the electronic artist James Blake, did better than David Bowie's The Next Day, Laura Mvula's Sing To The Moon & The Arctic Monkeys' AM.|
It's a real ceremony in Great Britain. On October 30, the 2013 edition of the Mercury Prize took place in London, the capital. Every year, since 1992, it is given to the best British or Irish artist for his/her album. Unlike the Brit Awards, some say that the quality is a privilege. Every year, the English bookmakers gave their advices. Whereas David Bowie, who came back 10 years after Reality & Laura Mvula, fourth of the BBC Sound of 2013, have both been favourites, the prize has finally been awarded to James Blake, for his second album Overgrown (Atlas Records & Polydor), released 2 years after his debut album. With his prize, the artist has also received £20,000. Last year, the winners have been the alternative band Alt-J with their album An Awesome Wave.
The nominees have been : Arctic Monkeys' AM, Disclosure's Settle, Foals' Holy Fire, Jake Bugg's debut album, Jon Hopkins's Immunity, Laura Marling's Once I Was An Eagle, Laura Mvula's Sing To The Moon, Rudimental's Home, Savages' Silence Yourself, Villagers' Awayland & James Blake's Overgrown.
Surprised & shy when he appeared on stage, the winner thanked his parents & said how "unbelievable" it was to be nominated next to David Bowie. He promised to make "a good use" of the amount of the money... He forgot to get it ! "It's the first trophy I have ever won, except a tennis trophy at 12 & I'll like both of them." James Blake, 25 years old, surprised everybody with his debut album, 2 years ago. Between electronic & experimental, his songs touched the English audience before making waves in Switzerland, Belgium & New Zealand.
His second album Overgrown entered at the 8th place in Great Britain, then turned to be more confidential. Despite the single "Retrograde" & the title-track, the album only sold 20,000 copies in Britain. But his victory should put him back in the spotlight...
