This is an explination of their name changed from their myspace blog...
well hello there folks. who had a good new years eve? i've heard some crazy stories from other peoples nights. mine was spent at my wonderful cousin/cousin-in-law's wedding sipping champagne and talking of times past. it was a wonderful affair followed by some pretty big news. yeah, we changed our name. i wanted to have a heart-to-heart with everyone to explain why we have done this and what's in store for the year.
i started this band 3 and a half years ago because i had some acoustic songs and alot of time to do nothing, so i combined both and created "Broken Summer." after that i went off to school to pursue the college thing never expecting to do anything with the band. after a year and a half i streamed broken summer up on purevolume and we started gaining a large fanbase really quickly with the top unsigned artists thing. this is the sole reason we've been able to do all the things we've been able to do and we could not be more thankful of purevolume for it. we started touring and within the year we were all doing the band as a full-time job. we kept touring, selling cds, promoting online, and were doing very well but in all that time we hadn't been contacted by one label. in the meantime, we were watching bands who haven't done half as much stuff as we've accomplished (i am not bragging by any means!) picking up deals and we were still doing everything independently. let me explain my thought on bands/labels. there are so many bands nowadays that just want to get signed and everything good will happen by being on a label. people have established this "vibe" that says, if you're a band on a label, you're big or getting big. it took me awhile to stray away from that mentality and realize that in order for your partnership with your label to work, you have to NEED the label, and it takes time for a band to really need to be on a label to take the next step. we've spent the last 3 and a half years working our asses off so that we could get to that point and we really believe we're ready to take the next step and find a home (label) for us to go to and get a full cd out. some people might ask...why don't you just do that yourselves? well, we could, and if it comes down to it we will, but we would like the opportunity to take a month or two to spend in a real studio with a producer to help us create/record the best songs we possibly can. we've never had the chance to because its insanely expensive and we would like the opportunity to do that. in the last 6 months we started getting contacted by label reps but it was then we started learning that pretty much the entire music industry, the people who control if we even have a shot at being in the business, absolutely hated our name. now, i'm not going to lie to you, i'm a strange person. i don't do things that people would call normal and its just my thing. when i started the band, i needed a name and being that i really didn't think this would go anywhere and that i'm a complete jackass, i chose ...and then I turned seven... i figured it was a funny name for a local band and it was even better cause i was putting out a seriousish cd. when things started happening online, we quickly dropped the periods (can't remember the actual word for what they are called) and turned ...and then I turned seven... to And Then I Turned Seven. we figured this could help with the industry side but it really didn't do anything but make it easier to type out the band name. after talking to many, many people, including fans, lawyers, labels, and ourselves, we decided that we had two choices: we could keep the name and continue doing what we've been doing or we could change our name and come at everyone from a different angle. over the last two years, the band has gone through some changes. we've added/lost people but in the end, we've been able to find the right people to make this band what it is. with that, it is a different band than when it started so we took that into consideration. we had to think about the fact that with any band name change, you end up loosing fans. this is the biggest reason why it took us so long to decide what we should do. we absolutely did/do not want to loose anyone who has supported us. we are so lucky to be able to do what we've been able to do and its 100% because of all of you. but that also made us think about the fact that right now we're broke, pat's homeless, we're in debt (though most bands are haha), and getting to the point to where we've been questioning if we can continue going on the way we were/are. its incredibly hard to keep your head up when you're unable to pay your bills, your band is split up (chris had to move back to Indiana to work and have a place to live, while chad lives 3 hours away in Minneapolis-so practicing/writing/hanging out together doesn't happen very often), and everyone is mentality exhausted with working and working but not seeing progress in the areas where we need the most help. i'm trying my best not to sound like a complainer but its tough. we've really just gone through alot of stuff (both good and bad) and in the end we decided that it was time for a change.
at this point i've been writing trying to write this for close to two hours so i'm going to take a pause for the cause.....(my toilet's screaming its thirsty.)
ok. so, change. i know alot of people don't like change. i know i personally dont like change for certain things, but change can be good sometimes and we're certain this change is the right choice. i've been reading all the comments and you guys are all amazing. its the comments that say, "im not a huge fan of the new name but i'll support your music no matter what" that really prove that. we are very blessed to have such supportive people. i know that some people aren't into the new name and that's totally fine, but i hope the music will be enough to keep your support because you have no idea how thankfull we are for it.
when it comes down to it, it's all about the music. i know i'm contradicting myself when i say that with us changing our name, but the god honest truth is that we're doing it so we can keep doing this. we truly feel this name opens more doors for us to help get our music out more. we love what we're doing, we love the new songs we're coming up with, we love playing shows, we love all the people we've played for, hungout with, slept with (um, collin, you never called me the next day. bastard) and we want to be able to keep doing it. again, i really can't tell you how much we appreciate all the nice messages/comments of support. your support means everything to us right now. i wish you all a very happy new year and thank you so much for everything! Dane
I thought i'd do a question and answer section to try and answer any other questions you may have....
1. why did you pick Jamestown Story? it came down to a few reasons. first, its shorter, easy to remember, and a bit mysterious. it was also a name associated with the band (The Jamestown Story EP) so it helps with the transition.
2. what will The Jamestown Story EP be called now? it's now going to be a self-titled EP, so it will just be Jamestown Story.
3. what's happening with the two cd's you have out? good question! first, we will be pressing Broken Summer, and adding 4 more songs (so 13 tracks total) two of which being unreleased songs. the artwork looks great and we're stoked to finally get it pressed and looking all snazzy. the EP will be re-pressed with different artwork and we're TRYING to put a new acoustic track. we're also working to get everything up on itunes, napster, etc so stay tuned for that.
4. If you're Jamestown Story, what will The Jamestown Story (The song) be called? tough call, but we decided to go with Dreaming of This. sometimes it makes sense to use parts of lyrics in songs so people aren't confused and we just felt this is a song in that catagory.
5. Do you plan on changing your music? absolutely not! that was the first thing we all agreed on was that we were just changing our name, not our style. we are not abandoning any old songs or anything like that. some of those songs mean alot to certain people and we will not be leaving those behind. as a band, we're starting to write more together and we're trying different things to develop our "sound" that we're trying to create. there will be no drastic changes but be prepared to swallow a mixture of broken summer, the EP, and new ideas cause it sure goes down good...
6. Why do you (dane) choose to wear track pants at shows sometimes? they are my favorite pants and the most comfortable pants every. combine that with extreme laziness and you'll have a comfortable Bramage.
Will the myspace/purevolume pages be changed, brand new, or anything? yes they will. the wonderful guys at myspace are helping us out with setting up the page and the purevolume will also be changed. the URL for those will be:
www.myspace.com/jamestownstory
www.purevolume.com/jamestownstory
the change will happen in the next few days.
7. What are your plans for 2007? we have lots of plans. for this next week we'll be trying to get everything set up and start promoting the change. throughout jan/feb we'll be weekend shows in the midwest and then at the end of february we'll be taking off for the west coast. we'll then be on the east coast in march/april and then much more touring in the spring and summer. we're spending the next month and a half to write, and try and finish some more demos so our wonderful team of people will start shopping those out. we're also going to try and broadcast a live acoustic show for you guys to watch so if anyone is able to help us set something like that up let me know!
8. Why is Chris called "Sickboy"? plain and simple, sickboy's always sick. we've taken him to numerous hospitals on tour and i'm sure we'll take him to more. he's just a sick little boy so he was crowned the name Sickboy.
9. What's the special you have going on for awhile? ahh, the special. if you come to a show starting jan 12th with any And Then I Turned Seven merchandise (shirt, cd, hoodie,) we'll give you a brand new jamestown story shirt, a sticker, and a button for $5. its just alittle thank you for picking up something in the past.
10. Will you have a website? Yes, it will be www.jamestownstory.com and we've also reserved thejamestownstory.com in case (thanks kevin and andee) and we'll be starting to build the site this month. we've decided to do it ourselves so we're in full control of it and can keep it updated daily.
11. What was with all the promoting throughout December? Let's face it, when a band changes its name alot of people don't even realize it. We took so many things into consideration when doing this and one was making sure that everyone new about it. Kieren and Pat came up with the 1/01/07 idea and i was stoked about it. we had so many people helping promote we couldn't believe it, and thank you to those people. it really helped get people excited for what was happening in the new year.
12. Anyone you'd like to thank? oh yes, thank you to Dave Stein for all the help with the change. thank you to jordan schmidt for doing all our recording, and helping us put together a team to work with us. all of the people who have helped us promote this change. its been so helpful for us.
IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS PLEASE LET US KNOW AND I'LL UPDATE THIS AND ANSWER THEM!
