Jason Reeves' 'Adventures' Bring Him Back To Iowa

Jason Reeves' story reads something like a tech-age dream: A guy with a music bug drops out of college in Iowa, moves to the West Coast, promptly gets noticed on MySpace and makes it big.
The singer-songwriter attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, dropped out and decided to move to California.
"I had no idea what I was doing, which is the reason I dropped out," Reeves said in a recent phone interview from Minneapolis. "I think I was trying to major in writing songs in class."
When Reeves got to California, he didn't intend to stay. He knew a producer there, Mikal Blue.
"I thought I was going out for a week to record a couple songs," he said.
Blue introduced Reeves to the second person he met on the West Coast: Colbie Caillat, the singer-songwriter whose debut album, "Coco," sold nearly 2 million copies and included 10 songs written or co-written by Reeves, including "Bubbly." He recently finished working with Caillat on her second album, "Breakthrough," due out in August.
Just to get the rumors straight, there was no romance between the two. Reeves lived with Caillat at her parents’ place for awhile.
"We're more like brother and sister," he explained.
Reeves and Caillat are a bit like musical twins: Folk-based singer-songwriters, both 24 years old, both signed after becoming sensations on MySpace.
Reeves' online-only album, "The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache (and other Frightening Tales)," won accolades as the Top Folk Album of 2007 on iTunes, which also named him Indie Artist of the Year in 2007. Reeves signed with Warner Brothers, which released "Magnificent Adventures" as a CD in stores in September 2008. He’s currently working on new songs.
"It's kind of a dream come true," Reeves said. "They (Warner Brothers) really do care about the music and the art."
It's been a whirlwind journey for the boy from Iowa City, and he’s glad to come back to his old stomping grounds.
"I have so many friends and family in and around Des Moines," he said. "I love it. It's so much better than playing in L.A."
