Song lyrics
Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music do you

Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you

And she tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
You know I used to live alone before I knew you

And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you

But remember when I moved in you
And the Holy Dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Maybe there is a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you

And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Just wondered why this was moving back up the charts 14 years after it's release. I know it's great just wondered why the surge.

Truly beautiful. It's so rare that a cover transcends the original... the only other that comes to mind is Cash's version of Hurt.

Well, apparently this was on the OC. I've never seen this show.

But for me, this is the best song ever written. The Rufus wayneright original is good to check out to. I say it is the best because, even though I have new favorites from time to time, those all pass. But this song always has me on the verge of tears. And it ALWAYS will.

This song is perfect, it has everything a good song needs- The lyrics, the voice, the instruments, the rhythm, the melody...
It's a song that you can't just listen to once and then don't care about it, it touches your soul.....
One thing is kind of fun the lyrics: "It goes like this the fourth, the fifth, the minor falls, the major lifts..." Describes how to play it on the guitar

...Yes, the first time I heard this song was on the season finale of the OC... absolutely great song, musically as well as lyrically. It's one of those songs that just brings you back... to the painful times. It didn't help that the OC was leaving you feeling incredible emotional and vulnerable. But, fantastic song regardless of the TV show.

to the person who talked about "singing the whole song" - that would be hard since Leonard Cohen actually wrote 15 verses for it! Wainwright sings the same verses as Jeff Buckley - 5 of them. Cohen only sung 4 on his original studio recording - perhaps it is him you are referring to?

To the person who described what it was about - you're sort of right. David played the harp for king Saul (who was king before he was) but he mostly played for God. Most of the psalms (worship songs in the Bible) were by him.

* offtopic :
i was talking about this with friends recently... what instrument would david play if he lived today? we concluded that he would mostly play acoustic guitar. he must have been an awesome songwriter (to have so many of his songs included in the Psalms) and harpist (to play for the king)... so he was probably some kind of Hendrix-esque (or if we're talking acoustic - Nick Drake-esque) guitarist and Bob Dylan-like songwriter. Or maybe he was like Jeff Buckley singing songs written by Leonard Cohen?

Solomon was actually David and Bathsheba's son, who was the next king after David.

The way I listen to it (i'm sure many different interpretations are available) this song is about the fall and redemption of David (or as the Hebrew proverb says - "Many sin like King David. Few repent like him"). And, more generally, the way God can take everything, even our sin, and use it for good. For example - David's sin of having Bathsheba's husband killed so he could marry her, leading to the birth of Solomon, who was a wise king - writing most of the Proverbs in the Bible just as his father had written most of the Psalms - and an ancestor of Jesus Christ himself.

Unfortunately, the verses John Cale (and most people who have covered it since then- Buckley included) chose to sing don't properly cover the redemption part. The fourth evokes the mood of contemplation, wanting to come back to God, but then the fifth is depressing again. My favourite verse in this song is the one Leonard Cohen sung last on his original studio recording. It really embodies the beautiful message of redemption... check it out here.

And even though it all went wrong,
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Sums up the song beautifully!

AMAZING SONG and to me it has nothing to do with that crappy show that starts with a O and ends with a C (with nothing in the middle) and by the way is this the original? It must be coz it sounds so good
