 3 posts | So I hear all these people complaing how the "Boys soldier on" part is sexist. Coming from someone who fully supports equal rights for all, when I heard and saw this part, I didn't think that was his intention.
In fact, I believe that the lines are saying the opposite. For years, men are taught to be strong and suck it up. What I got out of it was a man telling himself that he can do it on his own. That he won't show his emotions because he's been taught showing them is a sign of weakness. But then when he finds the girl who loves him and who he means the world to, after hearing her problems, it helps him accept his emotions a little bit better too. By which he means without that "warmth," the man would be left col and intolerant of how he truly feels. But hey. That's just my interpretation. Yours is different. I don't like it, but I accept it. I've always thought of the lyrics that way. |

I certainly don't listen to any of the crap John Mayer puts out, but I hear this fn song played as background music in stores etc, and all I hear is Mothers, and lovers, and fathers, and daughters, and mothers, and fathers be good to your daughters, cause your daughters are lovers, turn into mothers, and mothers be good to your daughters.....AHHHHHHHHHHH MAKE IT STOP!!!!! Who the hell writes stupid lyrics like this???? Better yet, who listens to this crap? This is the first time I've read the lyrics, just because I had to know who sings this monstrosity. I get what he's trying to say, which would be nice. But the chorus is so poorly written, and the constant word play between family members and the word "love" and "good" is enough to drive a person insane. I don't think there's a person in this world that wouldn't end it all if they had to sit in an enclosed room and listen to this garbage non-stop for 8 hours. Wow....just horrible. |

And that a man can usually hide these things And women tend to show it in the way they love there significant others.And if she doesn't know what it should fill like to love she can't love her child. |

1 posts | This song is very disappointing. While it's a nice sounding song and seems to have a good message at first, it seems this song is targeted at women. Why wouldn't a woman love this song? It's all about treating women right.
My wife hates this song. I have agree it's very sexist, which really has no place in our world. This sexism is equivalent to racism in my opinion, and is just simply offensive. "Boys, you can break" - Is John giving us his permission? Or is he saying that boys can handle being broken whereas girls cannot? "You'll find out how much they can take" - Rhymes with break. "Boys will be strong" - Not all boys are strong mentally, emotionally, or physically. As a child, I was hurt by this attitude that was adopted by my parents who were sensitive with my sisters and cruel with me. "He can take it, he's a boy. Boys don't cry or have feelings." "and boys soldier on" - Implication that men are soldiers and women are not. I'll ask my marine lady friends what they think about this. I am by no means a soldier, and many women are much better soldiers than I would ever be. "But boys would be gone without warmth from, A woman's good, good heart" - Boys would be gone? Does he mean they would die off without women? Are you sure it's a girl's "good heart" we are talking about here? Yes, neither women nor men would exist without the other in theory. Also, this implies that women have good hearts and men have...not so good hearts? Conclusion: John Mayer wants women to love him, and apparently doesn't mind compartmentalizing the whole male gender. Women who like him should like him based on his skill as an artist; not his worshiping of women and reduction of men. I think most women are smarter than this. Since when is the young John Mayer's philosophical view important? He apparently doesn't know much about the topic he's singing about. Grow up before giving the world advice please, John. Maybe you need to make a few more male friends. We aren't all hard and cold. |

Really amazing, quite heart-warming, but WHAT is up with the lyrics of the chorus? That is really a buzzkill to the entire song, as a result. Come on, John. Couldn't you compose the lyrics ATLEAST a little profoundly? Screwed up, bland chorus, really Of course, it's not like I disrespect family and whatever he's talking about, but there are ways of saying it that have so much meaning and etc. |

When listening to music I try to get what the message sending because every song has a message to tell. The message in this story is very accurate on what's actually happing in the world today. I can relate to this not that I have been in this type of situation, but I have heard from friends about theses unfortunate people and I have even talked to people that have gone throw this situation. Some of these people don't even know that there a victim, they think it's an everyday thing; don't know any other way. |
