vocal Very easily one of the greatest songs ever written, from one of the United Kingdoms greatest bands. Ian Curtis was an amazing frontman, but his suicide in 1980 was a tragic day for music. If anyone likes Joy Divisions' music then they should check out New Order, who the other members of Joy Division went onto become after the death of Ian Curtis.
i agree that this song is very deep but no way is it the best song ever, Ian Curtis has a terrible singing voice and i think its totally wrong to even suggest that Joy Division are one of the best bands ever.

but what really annoys me is ian curtis had epilepsy (i cant spell) and comitted suicide but then Kurt cobain goes and kills himself and suddenly the whole world is like he is god i dont understand sure he 'invented' grunge but then Ian started the whole post punk thing he is brilliant and doesnt get half the recognition he deserves

Y'know, the lyrics are pretty nifty, but denying that Curtis' voice is kinda off is completely pointless. Does anyone use their ears whilst listening to music? Rare is the occasion on which he'll hit a pitch straight-on. Can you hear it waver around? And no, I'm not just referring to the echo/reverb-type effect that gets added in a lot of their songs.
Really, though, this song is interesting cause of how Joy Division pulls off the contrast between the happy, light guitar sound and the somewhat sad lyrics.
