'Katharine McPhee' Album Review!

The self-titled debut album of American Idol favorite, Katharine McPhee, is a dance club mix of "hip pop" and R&B songs, starting with the upbeat "Love Story" about finding unexpected love when "...the boy you never wanted just steals your heart."
Hopefully, this isn't the same boy carried over to the next song, "Over It". A slow dance ballad, the singer relates the hurt of a breakup brought on by betrayal: "Moving on, it's my time / You never were a friend of mine / Hurt at first a little bit / And now I'm so over it."
Breakup songs seem to permeate at least half the album. "Not Ur Girl" -- an up-tempo percussive tune, and "Neglected" -- a bluesy ballad -- both have something in common other than the girl giving a boy the kiss-off: they both have McPhee sharing writing credits. In an interview with The-Trades, McPhee says of the inspirations for the songs, "I've had lots of relationships in my day, and I think most people can relate to those kinds of situations. It was just something that we were feeling in the moment, and it just seemed right at the time." In a very sentimental melody, the singer then does her best to convince herself that she's "Better Off Alone", after delivering a catchy pop-synth vengeful warning to other girls that the boy is "Dangerous".
Some of the songs are just fun for the sake of fun. "Open Toes" is a rapid rhythm ode to shoes: "I'm loving these slingback shoes / I like the way they stay loose / I could wear 'em all day and listen to the click-clacks / Shoes like this make me hate flats." And guys, it's okay to tap your foot along with this one -- and there's definitely a successful video to be produced around this ditty.
"Home" is breathy ballad, delivered to a loved one about the feelings that love evokes: "Does anybody know what it's like / To feel larger than life? / To love deep in your soul / And know you're not alone? / Does anybody know how it feels / To find something that's real / And make it your own? / That when you know that you've found home." If there's an anthem to be found on the album for release as a single, "Home" would be in steep competition with "Ordinary World", both of which are capable of being genre-crossing performances.
Relying perhaps too heavily on synth-mix and background singers, and with a song catalog that could stand to be a bit more varied, "Katharine McPhee" nonetheless delivers on the promise that American Idol viewers saw take her through to the finals in 2006. |
