The Heart Behind the Hit Music From 'Juno'
| 14-01-2008 10:21 | 0 reaction(s) | add reaction | add news |
Outside of the utter charm and warmth of the unfolding story, one of the most memorable components of the hit movie Juno is the soundtrack anchored by the songs of Kimya Dawson. She will be unfamiliar to most viewers of the film, but Dawson, as 1/2 of the group Moldy Peaches, is considered a leading light of the anti-folk movement. The anti-folk movement (a loosely defined genre primarily accepted to be using folk music idioms to subvert pretentiousness in the music industry) counts Regina Spektor among its leaders as well.
Dawson's songs are arresting in both their directness and their disarming humor. The Moldy Peaches have been inactive since 2004, but Kimya Dawson has continued to record solo and tour constantly. She has performed with such established artists as They Might Be Giants and Third Eye Blind. She achieves her trademark homemade sound through 4-track cassette recording. The Juno soundtrack featuring many of Dawson's songs will debut in the top 10 of the Billboard album chart this week. |
