King Crimson is a rock band founded in 1969. Although typically categorised as a foundational progressive rock group, the band has incorporated diverse influences and instrumentation during its history (including jazz and folk music, classical and experimental music, psychedelic rock, hard rock and heavy metal, new wave, gamelan, electronica and drum and bass). The band has been influential on many contemporary musical artists and gained a large cult following despite garnering little radio or music...

@ Lizard

Lizard, is even by today's standards, a remarkable and extraordinary album. Often described as "jazzy", Lizard is basically baroque rock, but its mellotron fanfares are mixed with the splintered lines of jazz pianist Keith Tippett and the free-blowing horn section from his sextet.

Circus is a fine opener but the Indoor Games is along with Happy Family some of the stranger tunes ever from Crimson. Lady is another tune in the mould of Cadence or Talk to the Wind. Of course everyone waits for LIZARD and its 23+ min. The first part most everybody knows because of the Yes-man on vocals and is quite fine. Comes a very delicate Bolero (a better version on the 4 cd box-set) that is the only one that does honour to Ravel and then comes the heart of the album - the Battle - savage war-like drumming flying reeds and mellotron layers making it a great number from Crimson.

Line-up / Musicians

- Robert Fripp / guitar, mellotron, electric keyboards & devices
- Mel Collins / flute & saxes
- Gordon Haskell / bass guitar & vocals
- Andy McCulloch / drums
- Peter Sinfield / words & pictures

WITH:
- Robin Miller / oboe & cor anglais
- Mark Charig / cornet
- Nick Evans / trombone
- Keith Tippet / piano & electric piano
- Jon Anderson of YES / vocals on "Lizard - a. Prince Rupert Awakes"

@ Earthbound

Poorly recorded bootleg quality live album recorded towards the end of the 1972 US tour when tensions were running high within the band. For many years the only live document of pre-1973 King Crimson material. This is real live music played by 3 really good musicians and their "friend" who is OK at mostly keeping a low profile. It's interesting to note that while Crimson studio songs were more rock based, live they tended to get into a lot of funk-jazz type jams. This is true of this version of the band, as well as the Wetton-Bruford band.

Line-up / Musicians

- Boz Burrell / bass, vocals
- Mel Collins / alto, baritone & tenor, saxophones, mellotron
- Robert Fripp / guitar
- Ian Wallace / drums

@ In the Court of the Crimson King

This is one of the most amazing debuts by any band of any time.

"21st century schizoid man" has jazzy sax parts, OUTSTANDING fast and complex drums, and a very melodic, present and complex bass. Fripp's electric guitar is mind troubling, already being bizarre and experimental.

"I talk to the wind" has relaxing flutes, placid vocals and gentle drums.

"Epitaph" has very poignant floating mellotron streams a la Genesis (Nursery cryme). Greg's lead vocals are emotional and passionate. Fripp uses peaceful guitars, mostly acoustic.

"Moonchild" is catchy and addictive, particularly Greg's voice. Fripp's guitar follows more the rhythm and the melody of this track, despite his electric guitar solos in the background are a bit irritating.

One of the best tracks is definitely the last one, "The court of the crimson king", which has full of intensely floating mellotron, heroic backing vocals, soothing flutes, accessible guitar sounds and varied drums. Near the end, there is an excellent childish part of woodwind instruments: very charming!

Line-up / Musicians

- Robert Fripp / guitar
- Greg Lake / bass guitar, lead vocals
- Ian McDonald / reeds, woodwind, vibes, keyboards, mellotron, vocals
- Michael Giles / drums, percussion, vocals
- Peter Sinfield / words and illumination

Pure poetry, both sweet and melancholy. Ethereal sound as usual from KC.
