Koji Kondo is a Japanese video game composer best known for working at the Nintendo company on Nintendo music, for Nintendo games including Super Mario Bros series, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy 1, 2, Legend of Zelda series including Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wind Waker Star Fox Series including Star Fox SNES, Star Fox 64, Pilotwings SNES and Punch Out.

(Early Childhood years)

Koji Kondo was born in Nagoya, Japan on August 13, 1961. When Koji was 5 years old he began taking Piano and Organ lessons. He improved his piano skills so much that he was able to join Jazz Rock bands. He was influenced by the rock music group Deep Purple.

(Nintendo years 1983-present)

Later on Koji Kondo went to College at Osaka University of Arts to study music, however he never studied classical music or heavily devoted to music but he was able to arrange music. Then in 1983 during the video game crash of Atari. Koji Kondo got a letter from the Nintendo company inviting him to work for the Japanese Nintendo company which he accepted.

Koji Kondos first video game soundtrack he worked on was the Arcade game Punch Out (1984) which he was able to overcome the sound limitations of the arcade game at the time. Then in 1984 he composed the music for the Japanese video game Devil World for the Famicom system which was popular in Japan at the time.

(NES video game era 1985-1990)

Then in 1985 Koji Kondo composed the music for the NES game cartridge in America called "Super Mario Bros 1" (1985) NES at the time when Nintendo console was released in North America. In 1986 he composed the music to "The Legend of Zelda" (1986) NES. Both games sold very well in Japan, and North America which are considered the best Nintendo games of all time among Nintendo fans and video game critics that the music from Super Mario Bros 1 and The Legend of Zelda songs would be reused in later Mario and Zelda games and even in video game concerts, also it would be released on Virtual Console.

Also his music was used in Super Mario Bros: Lost Levels but it wasn't until 1993 when Super Mario All Stars Snes came out due to the game being too hard to win at the time. In 1987 he composed the music to the sequel "Super Mario Bros 2" (1987) NES and "Super Mario Bros 3" (1988). The NES games sold very that in 1990 The Nintendo company came out with the Super Famicom in 1990 and Super Nintendo Console in 1991 and the NES era came to a close.

(SNES video game era 1991-1996)

In 1990 Koji Kondo composed the music to the Snes game "Pilotwings" which was considered the best Snes game at the time and at the same time he composed the music to "Super Mario World" and in 1991 Nintendo would release the Super Nintendo console which allowed the people in Europe and North America to play Super Mario Worldwhich became the best selling Snes game of all time that there would be a gameboy advance remake in 2002. Koji Kondo then composed the music to "Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" (1991) became the bestselling Nintendo game of all time that it was remade on Gameboy Advance in 2002.

In 1993 he composed the music to Super Mario All Stars (1993) and composed the music to (Star Fox) 1993 which also became the bestselling Nintendo game of all time. In 1995 he composed the music to the first game "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" (1995) which started the Yoshi Island series and was remade on Gameboy Advance in 2002. He also contributed songs to Snes games including "Donkey Kong Country 3" (1996) with Dave Wise and Super Mario RPG. The Super Nintendo era came to a close in 1996. When Nintendo released the Nintendo 64 console.

(Nintendo 64 video game era 1996-2001)

In 1996 Koji Kondo composed the music to the first 3D Super Mario 64 (1996) for the N64 game. It became the bestselling game of all time among Nintendo fans and video game critics from IGN, Gamespot and Gamefaqs. Then in 1997 he composed the music to Star Fox 64 which was also considered the bestselling game.

Then in 1998 Koji Kondo composed the music to the first 3D "Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time" (1998) which also became the bestselling game of all time among Legend of Zelda fans and Video game critics. Despite it becoming the bestselling game, the game faced controversy among Muslims for the Fire Temple chant that the Fire Temple music was later altered in the "Zelda Collectors Edition" for Gamecube and remade for 3DS in 2011. After that Koji Kondo would help out with music with the other Japanese video game composers. He help out with music to Mario Party 1, 2, 3 for N64. Mario Golf Mario Tennis for N64. In 2000 Koji Kondo helped Toru Minegishi with "Legend of Zelda Majoras Mask" a Zelda game with a 3 day time loop which became a bestselling game which would get remade for 3DS in 2015. Then in 2001 he supervised the music to Mario Kart Super Circuit for Gameboy advance and he contributed to "Paper Mario 64" the last Nintendo 64 game cartridge to be released. Around that time the Nintendo Gamecube console was released in 2001 the Nintendo 64 era came to an end.

(Nintendo Gamecube era 2001-2006)

In 2002 Koji Kondo composed the music to "Super Mario Sunshine" (2002) which also became the bestselling Gamecube game. At the same time he helped compose the music to "Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" (2002) which was also the bestselling Gamecube game which got remade on the Wii U in 2013.

He also composed the music to Mario Party 4, 5, 6, 7. He also contributed music to Paper Mario 2: Thousand Year Door. He also helped out with the music to Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Gameboy Advance, Partners in Time DS, Bowsers Inside Story DS. He also composed music to "The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure" and helped out with the music to "Donkey Konga" 1, 2. Then in 2006 the Nintendo Wii console came out and the Gamecube era came to an end.

(Nintendo Wii era 2006-present)

In 2006 Koji Kondo composed music to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006) as the final Gamecube game and the first Zelda game on the Wii which became the bestselling game for both the Gamecube and Wii. In 2007 he composed music to "Super Mario Galaxy 1" (2007) which became the bestselling game of all time. He helped out with the music to Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Party 8, 9, 10. In 2008 he helped out with the music to Super Smash Bros Brawl (2008)

In 2009 Koji Kondo composed music to New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009) which also became the bestselling Wii game. and composed music to "The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks" DS (2009) In 2010 he composed music to "Super Mario Galaxy 2" (2010) which also became bestselling as well. In 2011 he composed the music to Star Fox 64 3D for 3DS and in that same year he composed music to "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" Wii (2011) which also became the bestselling game and the last Wii game. Also he was nominated for best music in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Then in 2012 the Nintendo company released the Wii U console which struggled to sell in Japan, North America and Europe. But despite this it picked up sales in a few years. Koji Kondo composed music to "Super Mario 3D World" (2013) which also got him nominated for best music. He also helped out with "New Super Mario Bros. U" "New Super Luigi U" "Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U" Mario & Luigi: Dream Team 3DS Paper Mario 4: Sticker Star and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon"

Koji Kondo has composed music at a concert in a Rosemont Theater in Rosemont, Illinois, in 2006. Also in 2014 he played the piano with the Rock band Imagine Dragons. Currently he is supervising music for the upcoming Wii U game "The Legend of Zelda Wii U".
