AboutThe Latin Music Industry, entertainment writers, foreign record labels, critics, musicians and tropical music lovers all over the Hispanic market place accepted, awarded and followed Charanga 76 to success for two decades.
Charanga 76 was founded by Felipe (Pipo) Martinez and made its debut in the spring of 1976 simultaneously with the release of an LP which produced the run-away hit "Soy". In this recording was the first time a cfharanga orchestar usedsingers in harmony & falsetto and ballads were arranged and performed in up-tempo (son, guaracha) rhythms. Another follow-up hit in 1977 was "KU-Ku-Cha de Maria Elena" and the trend was on with "Regresaras", "Wanda", "Flores". "El Cafe de Hialeah" and many others. In 1979 Charanga 76 scored a tremendous success with the recorded Spanish version of #1 hit "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" titled in Spanish "No Nos Pararan". The three top radio stations in New York City: WBLS, WKTU and KISS-FM made it a part of their rotation, mixing the original English recording with Charanga 76's Spanish version.
Another innovation, with exceptional acceptance, was the release in 1984 with "Manhattan Groove", A Charanga 76 English version of top-40 standards.
In 1986 Charanga 76 (and Kim Records) recorded and released the first-ever 100% digital CD by a Latin orchestra.
Charanga 76 went dormant in the mid 1990s and only performs on contracts for special occasions, concerts, dances and the like.
In 2004 Charanga 76 had a ReUnion concert with the founding and later members of the orchestra bringing an unforgettable night to the seasoned and young crowd as well as to a new generation.
