AboutLarry Santos (born 2 June 1941, Oneonta, New York) is an American pop singer-songwriter. He is best known for his grammy-winning pop hits, ""Don't Let the Music Stop", "We Can't Hide it Anymore", "You Got Me Where You Want Me" and "Now That I Have Found You". He is described as other popular pianist/singers, Carole King and Barry Manilow. Because he is called "America's Smooth Pop Crooner", his soft and smooth baritone is influenced by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Gordon Lightfoot, John Sebastian and Jack Jones. He is also best known for his signature pop compositions of "Take The Bows", written with John Bettis, Richard Wilbur, Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman, "It Takes Two", written with Barry Hurd, James Horner, Tom Snow and Cynthia Weil, "Get To Know Your Feelings", written with Barry Hurd, Marvin Hamlisch, David Shire and Carole Bayer Sager, "Where You Are", written with Tom Snow and Cynthia Weil and "Don't Take The Easy Way Out" written with Carole Bayer Sager.
When he was younger, he formed with the late '50s pop group, The Tones and released their hit song, "We Belong Together". He also formed a new '60s group, The Legends and scored their biggest pop hits, like "Don't Pick On My Baby" and probably "Someday (When I'm Gone)" with The Four Seasons on backup vocals. He wrote tunes for several American pop bands in the 1960s, including the 1963 #3 hit "Candy Girl" for The Four Seasons. While he was writing songs for The Four Seasons, he wrote "Knock! Knock (Who's There?)" for The Orlons; he also wrote "Unbelievable Guy" with Bob Crewe for Diane Renee Kushner, better known as Diane Renay and "Any Kind Of Love" for Nora Ferrari, better known as Tracey Dey, which is the flipside of "I Won't Tell" both in 1964. A year later after 1964, with Bob Crewe once again, he wrote "Speak Of The Devil" for Danny Harrison, which is the flipside of "I'm A Rolling Stone". In the mid-Sixties, he recorded a few singles, entitled, "Can You Imagine It", "Because I Got You", "Cheryl Anne", "Valerie", and furthermore, "Only A Fool" as part of a group called The Madisons, as well as under his own name.
In 1969, he released his first debut pop album, "Just A Man (1969 debut album)" that features 3 pop songs, written by himself, entitled, "You Got Me Where You Want Me", "Woman-Child" and the title cut. It also features "Paper Chase", written by Jimmy Webb. In 1970, he released his second pop album, "Mornin' Sun" that features 2 pop songs, "Now That I Have Found You" and the title track. It also includes his pop cover versions of "Both Sides, Now", originally performed by Judy Collins, "Bridge over Troubled Water", originally performed by Simon & Garfunkel, "Get Together", originally performed by The Youngbloods, "Sweet Caroline", originally performed by Neil Diamond and "I Keep It Hid ", originally written and performed by Jimmy Webb. While preparing for his third album he co-wrote "Promise Me, I Can Count On You" with Virginia Grimmier, Johnny Cymbal and Peggy Clinger in 1971. In 1973 he released his third pop album, "Legacy (1973 album)" that features "Someone's Gotta Start Today", "Touching You", and "Some Kind Of Summer" with Dandelion Wine (a short-lived one-off studio manufactured group with 2 members from Tony Orlando and Dawn, named Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson on backing vocals), produced by Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey, plus his pop cover versions of "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", originally performed by Aretha Franklin with the gender changed, "Proud Mary", originally performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival and "Ain't No Sunshine", originally performed by Bill Withers. On the side he co-wrote "Just Me And You" with his friends, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Roger Nichols, Bill Lane and Dan Yessian.
Santos' music falls into the genre of blue-eyed soul-flavored pop; he released three albums in the 1970s, such as his fourth self-titled album, which is "Larry Santos (album)", his fifth album, "You Are Everything I Need" and his sixth album, "Don't Let The Music Stop" and scored one pop hit single, produced by Don Davis, "We Can't Hide it Anymore", which peaked at #36 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on 10 April 1976.[1] Although everyone thought he was a one-hit wonder of the '70s since he scored that one pop hit, written by Barry Murphy, he scored more pop hits, such as "Long, Long Time", originally performed by Linda Ronstadt from her 1970 album, "Silk Purse", "Don't Let the Music Stop", "For The Rest Of My Life", "Guess I'll Be Alright" and "Lovin' Woman"; he also covered a pop ballad, written by James Dean and John Glover, entitled, "I Hope We Get to Love in Time", originally performed by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. from his 1977 pop/adult contemporary/easy listening album, "Don't Let The Music Stop" with Brandye, which is a female backing vocal group of 3 ladies, named, Donna Davis, Cynthia Douglas and Pamela Vincent providing the lovely harmonious background vocals behind him.
Late in 1977 he co-wrote with a lyricist, named, Norman Gimbel, who wrote with Bill Conti on the pop song, "You Heard The Song" on his 1977 pop album, "Don't Let The Music Stop" and a composer, named, Charles Fox on the pop song, "Everybody Has Their Feelings".
In the late 1970s, Santos starred in a syndicated children's program; now a family program called Hot Fudge. While he was on that positive family program, in early 1978 he co-wrote the disco-flavored upbeat pop song "Think It Over" with his fellow songwriters Roy Lessin and Richard Wilbur, who co-wrote "Her Hair" with a French composer, named, Michel Legrand which would be for Joyce Berry to record and sing in a disco/pop style as a full complete version for both the family pop album, "Hooray For Friendship and 9 Other Hits from the Hot Fudge T.V. Show" and her 1985 album "Taste And See" whereas Larry sang the incomplete short version of that song about positive thinking with Seymour, the puppet joining in, taken from the popular family program, "Hot Fudge Show". In early 1978 he also co-wrote with a fellow composer, named, David Shire and 2 fellow lyricists, named, Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman, who wrote the theme song from the TV show, "Alice", entitled, "There's A New Girl In Town", performed by Linda Lavin on the pop song, "Enjoy The Year You're Living" as a full pop version while he was on that family program. In 1978, he also co-wrote with his fellow popular lyricist and songwriter, named, Carole Bayer Sager on the shuffle pop song, entitled, "Don't Take The Easy Way Out". In 1980 he co-wrote the full version of "Take The Bows" with his friends as songwriters and lyricists from the pop music field, named, John Bettis, Richard Wilbur, Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman.
Larry Santos returned to the studio recorded a 7th compilation album, "Interplay (1980 album)", that features 5 new cuts, "The Way I Love You", "I'll Come Back To You", with his daughter Laura, a pop cover version of The Drifters' "There Goes My Baby", "If I Could" and "Sailing Away".
As a pop songwriter while doing commercial jingles on the side, in 1981 he co-wrote "It Takes Two" – a signature pop ballad once again with Barry Hurd, James Horner and Cynthia Weil, which would be 7 years later for George Stewart and his 1988 Columbia Records album, "More Than A Woman", "Get To Know Your Feelings" - a signature shuffle pop song about knowing your feelings one more time with Barry Hurd, Marvin Hamlisch, David Shire and Carole Bayer Sager and "Where You Are" once again with Tom Snow and Cynthia Weil as full pop versions; he co-wrote "Early Light" with Diana Sue Lindley, "Richly Blessed" with Judy Hart Angelo (who co-wrote with pop star/songwriter, Gary Portnoy on the theme song from "Cheers", "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" and theme song, "Every Time I Turn Around" from the NBC TV Series, "Punky Brewster" with Soleil Moon Frye), Janice Kasowski and Paul Vance, "You And Me Forever" with his friends, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil as a husband-and-wife songwriting team, "Each Morning Is A Fine New Creation" with Louise Corder, Pamela Philips, Jack Nitzsche, Will Jennings, Michael Masser and Buffy Sainte-Marie for Debbie Sims and for her 1982 Private Stock Records debut album, "Early Light"; he co-wrote "Everytime I Remember Your Name" with his songwriting friends, Katherine Smith Matheney, Dean Pitchford, Judy Hart Angelo, James P. Dunne, Michael Gore and Pamela Phillips for her second 1983 Prelude Records album, "Stand Tall"; for her third 1984 Private Stock Records album, "Wealth, Love And Fame" he-co wrote "We Are Here To Keep The Faith With You" with his friends, Bob Crewe, Hope C.
