AboutLawson, formerly known as The Grove, are a four-piece British band signed that are signed to Polydor Records. The band consists of Andy Brown, Adam Pitts, Joel Peat and Ryan Fletcher, who are originally from Liverpool, Chesterfield, Mansfield and Brighton respectively. The band are currently based in London. Their debut album, Chapman Square, is due for release on October 22, 2012. It has been preceded by the top five singles "When She Was Mine" and "Taking Over Me'", with their third single "Standing in the Dark" set for release on 14th October 2012.

After finishing at a "Brit" style music school, drummer Adam Pitts began searching for a singer-songwriter. He contacted Andy Brown, through his acoustic Myspace page, and just over three months later, the pair met up in London. Andy introduced Adam to bass player Ryan Fletcher, who Andy had previously met a few years back at a similar "Brit School" style music college. They agreed to form a band, bringing in guitarist Joel Peat, who Ryan knew from his childhood, to complete the line-up. The band came up with the name "The Grove" after visiting an American shopping centre of the same name. The band began recording material in early 2010, and their debut recording, "When She Was Mine", became one of the highest rated songs on YouTube within a week. They soon began playing gigs around the United Kingdom, including the Wireless Festival.
"The Grove" decided to change their name after lead singer Andy was diagnosed with a brain tumour. His doctor, "Dr. Lawson", completed a successful operation to remove it, and in honour of his successful recovery, the band re-named themselves "Lawson".

In 2011, the band made their mainstream breakthrough after becoming the support act for one of Britain's biggest pop bands, The Wanted, on their first ever arena tour, The Behind Bars Tour. The band made a great impression on the audience, and received good reviews from fans and critics alike. Having developed a friendship with The Wanted, they returned as the support act for The Wanted's second tour, #TheCode Tour. In an interview, the band told In Demand that they find working with The Wanted very inspiring. "The Wanted boys are amazing and we love them, we became so close, and they really looked after us on tour. But they also played a lot of pranks." They have also stated that watching The Wanted perform first hand gave them something to aspire to, because they had seen how much the band had grown within a year, especially cracking the United States. "The Wanted lads are amazing, they're absolutely incredible with us. We did the theatre tour and the arena tour with them, so we've watched them in about a years time go from doing theatres to then doing arenas, and now smashing it up in the States as well. It's massively inspirational, and they are all such nice lads!" On September 8, 2011, it was announced that the band had been signed to Polydor Records, with a lucrative two-album deal on the cards. After signing to a major label, Lawson were tasked with opening for other acts such as Will Young, Avril Lavigne, and as stated before, again for The Wanted.

The band's first official single, When She Was Mine, was released on May 27, 2012, reaching #4 on the UK Singles Chart. Following the single release, the band undertook their second headline tour, in which they visited locations such as Glasgow, Sheffield, Nottingham, London and Birmingham.[12] The band's second single, Taking Over Me, was released on August 5, 2012, doing even better, peaking at #3 on the UK Singles Chart. In support of the single, the band appeared at the Blackberry Summer Daze concert in August 2012. In August 2012, the band announced a Hometown Tour, which will visit the cities the band members are originally from, and their current hometown. They are set to play five dates, starting on the October 31, 2012, in Liverpool, and ending on November 6, in London. In September 2012, the band announced the release of their third official single, "Standing in the Dark", which will be available to purchase from October 14, 2012. Shortly after the annnouncement, the band revealed that their debut album, Chapman Square, would be released on October 22. Guitarist Joel Peat said of the album: "We're all so excited to release our debut album, we've been building up to it for the past four years, and the album's title for us is special, because it is the first place that we played together as a band. Going out on tour to support the album is amazing too. Doing shows in our Hometowns feels like the perfect way to celebrate. Performing live is what we love the most, so to be able to play our biggest venues to date in the Cities where we grew up is very special." Lawson have cited many inspirations for their debut album, including John Mayer.
