Musician Lights Moonlights As MTV Superhero

 All her life, kooky Canadian keytarist Lights idolized superheroes like Wonder Woman. She’s become one herself, as the animated star of MTV’s new series “Audio Quest: A Captain Lights Adventure,” with three-minute episodes on Monday mornings. Her character is on a mission to “harvest the sounds of the universe,” but a villain named Lotar stands in her way. The Juno winner plays in San Francisco on Wednesday, backing her synth-sculpted debut “The Listening.”
So now you have your own raygun, jet pack and interstellar space ship? I know! And I went as far as to tattoo that raygun and its holster on my stomach — exactly the same model as Captain Lights uses. When I watched all the episodes for the first time, I was like, whoa, I’ve accomplished a lot in my career, but this is one of the things that makes me the most proud.
You scripted the whole thing, right? Yeah. And I worked really closely with (Marvel animator) Tomm Coker and his partner Daniel Freedman. They just have crazy imaginations, and were coming up with stuff that I didn’t even think of and bringing it to life in the most amazing way. I had the idea of Captain Lights floating around in my head forever, but they just took it to another level.
Has this only whetted your appetite for bigger cinematic projects? It’s made me hungry for it, that’s for sure. Now I’m like, “How far can we take this? Should we make a video? A movie?” We even use the same character — only a different artist’s rendition of it — in my new “Saviour” video. I also have ambitions of making a game out of it some day.
That’s right — you’re a huge fan of “World of Warcraft,” no? I play daily. Like backstage at the venue or at the hotel or whenever I have an hour or two before I go to bed. But I’m smart about it; music is my priority, absolutely, and if I’m tired and I need to write, I’ll definitely focus on that.
How’s the love life going? I actually have a boyfriend; he’s in a band called the Devil Wears Prada. We met on “Warcraft” — seriously! I would rather stay home and play that on a Friday night than go out to a bar. You just buy a couple of beers and stay in. You save a lot of money that way!
