| Song lyrics |
How many roads must a man walk down,
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail,
Before she sleeps in the sand?
How many times must cannonballs fly,
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
How many years can a mountain exist,
Before it's washed to the seas
How many years can some people exist,
Before they're allowed to be free?
How many times can a man turn his head,
Pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
Yes and how many times must a man look up,
Before he can see the sky?
Yes and how many ears must one man have,
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes and how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

hello,
I am very interesting in your study!!
i am from holland and for my school I have to make also a study of bob dylan but it isnt very easy..there are not that much books of bob dylan and on the internet you can find only a bio and stuff like that..
I cant never find anything about the protestsongs he made and so on..
maybe you can help me??
about blowin' in the wind..
I think bob dylan is brainstorming about the sad things in this life..'how many roads must a man walk down, before you can call him a man' i think that he was saying: how far you can go? why cant we just accept each other.. but I dont know if its right...
im sorry for the bad english, im not that good in it..
but if you wanna answer, please mail me..

| im just a senior in high school right now but i have a lot of interest in dylan's works. i persnally believe that blowin' in the wind is bob dylan's reply to racist violence during the civil rights uprising. to me, the phrase 'how man years can some people exist before theyre allowed to be free' sets this off. most every question can be compared to dylans political views on racism, stringly opposing it- and war.. once more strongly opposing it. dylan was a tremendous man of character to stand up like this during times of civil unjust and should be commended for it. | 06-11-2004 19:15 abc_523 | 206 posts
| well, it seems that i'm the only one who doesn't have to work about bob dylan in school or at university
well, i like the part
Yes and how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
best. For me that means that every war is unneccessary and things like that. I love this song! | 02-02-2005 19:47 Sally_Anne | 3 posts

| oh, sorry, i didn't realise you wanted us to tell you what we thought of the song.
Well, the first line, how many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man, immediatley establishes a very serious and contraversial issue. I think that that line is the most effective, as it really does make you question society that we live in, I mean, what does a man have to go through before people consider them to be a 'real' man? And again, the next line, 'how many seas must the white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand' well, how much does someone have to go through before they can be left to rest? Both these lines are very metorphorical, and i think that Dylan uses the metaphors effectivley, his words make us question our own beliefs. They are truly moving. I hope this helps. | 08-02-2005 07:13 PoisonIvy77R | 6 posts
| Thanks for the feedback. The topic of my study ended up changing. Sorry, but it is a long story ending with the questions in songs not really being able to work. I still think it could have turned out well. I guess it wasn't the time and I didn't have the right crowd. But, I enjoyed reading your comments. Maybe one day I will do another study. If you want to ask any questions or talk about anything you can email PoisonIvy77R@yahoo.com. This is a great song and is worht reflecting upon. I wish I heard him play it live, but no luck there. Its nice to hear others appreciate it.

its about stuff like anti war, anti society, how everyone is always on you for whatever you do. also anti racism, pro peace. like dylan at that time. but dont forget, he wasnt always anti war. quote "american policies being brought down by foregin oil..." | 16-10-2005 13:58 benj154 | 9 posts

Not Dylan's best, but his breakthrough. This was the song that made everybody know who Bob Dylan was. For that, it had a great purpose. Other than that, although it is a classic, great song, it is not his best work. | 26-01-2006 19:02 Gate_Kepper |

Jesus Floweringg H. Christ.. You people, yes all of you, are flowering retards. I am only making this one post to correct all of you who made assumptions about this song when you know nothing. The whole song, and especially the lines "How many roads must a man walk down, Before you call him a man?" refers to African Americans in the South. As hopefully all of us know (unless you're completely retarded) Blacks in the South have rudely been called "Boy" by whites, even when they are older than the white man or woman making this asshole comment. I beg you, read over the lyrics and constantly remind yourself "African Americans in the South. African Americans in the South." You all are dumbasses.
Good day to you.

| This song is my childhood... sitting around a campfire, or in the garden with my mum, singing this along to the guitar...yeaahhh.
Tha poster above is right in the intended meaning of the song, but a)why be so rude about it and b)I think it's exactly the kind of song that deserves to interpreted differently by the individual listener. It is deliberately non cause-specific. | 02-03-2006 04:41 MEade | 224 posts
