Lyrics

É meu e vosso este fado
Destino que nos amarra
Por mais que seja negado
Às cordas de uma guitarra

Sempre que se ouve o gemido
De uma guitarra a cantar
Fica-se logo perdido
Com vontade de chorar

Ó gente da minha terra
Agora é que eu percebi
Esta tristeza que trago
Foi de vós que a recebi

E pareceria ternura
Se eu me deixasse embalar
Era maior a amargura
Menos triste o meu cantar

Ó gente da minha terra
Agora é que eu percebi
Esta tristeza que trago
Foi de vós que a recebi

Hi everyone. Just contributing with an alternate translation (based on grounded_angel's very good translation)... just changed a few verses, so it seems slightly more accurate to me. (But, yeah, "literary" Portuguese is not easy to directly translate to English)

"This fado is mine and yours
    Destiny that keeps us tied
How hard we try to deny it
To the strings of a guitar

    Everytime we hear the moan
    singing, on a guitar
    One gets instantly lost
    With the willing to cry

    Oh people from my land
    Now I understood
    That this sadness I have
It was from you I got it

    It would look like tenderness
If i'd let myself to rock
The bitterness would be greater [but]
    Less sad my singing

    Oh people from my land
    Now I understood
    That this sadness I have
It was from you I got it"

hey angel...thank you for the translation....you were so quick with it.... i know only a few about fado but to understand it you dont really need to know the lyrics %100 i think... in every move of mariza its easy to see the pain ,the tears and the holy ambiance of a lament...its about live and death...and the fascinating thing of her is that she has the gift to show it to any person from anywhere on this planet even if they dont understand it.i liked to know the lyrics because i was wondering what it is about...i heard that shes from somewhere in africa ...is that correct??? thank you soooo much again ....vaya con dios...

I can try to make a translation of it, even though this is fado and for the portuguese fado is more than a song, it's a feeling

This fado is mine and yours
    Destiny that keeps us tied
How hard we try to deny it
To the strings of a guitar

    Everytime we hear the groan
    Of a singing guitar
    We stay always lost
    With the willing to cry

    Oh people from my land
    Now I understood
    That this sadness I have
It was from you I got it

    It would look like tenderness
If i'd let myself to rock
It would be the biggest bitter
    Less sad than my singing

    Oh people from my land
    Now I understood
    That this sadness I have
It was from you I got it

Translated it doesn't make that sense, but this song talks mainly about the portuguese heritage, the fado.. She got the fado from the people of her country! Hope you understand..
