AboutMelina León (neé Yamillette Aponte-Yunqué) was born one July 12 in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Her passion for singing traces back to childhood, when her mother, Asunción Yunqué, frequently sang to Melina and her brothers. Melina started her professional career as a teenager, when she showed her melodious voice in musical groups such as Las Cherís and Rubí. Later on she became part of other musical groups that performed in important hotels in Puerto Rico. At the time the young artist performed ballads and pop songs, which helped set up the basis for her ultimate desire: launching a career as a solo artist.

She was discovered by one of the executives of the Tropic Mix record label during one of those hotel performances, and in 1997 her first album was released. "Mujeres Liberadas" marked the beginning of a rising and spectacular artistic career. The album, produced by Alejandro Montalbán and Eduardo Reyes, became a hit and many of its songs held the top spots in Puerto Rican radio.

Her second album "Con Los Pies Sobre La Tierra" was released in 1998. Melina's musical maturity was evident, and thematically she surrendered to the expression of love in its many forms. With this album, Melina positioned herself as one of the most prominent female performers in Puerto Rico, and received numerous awards such as "Tu Música" in the "Best Merengue Production (Female)" category, "Most Beautiful Legs On TV", "Best Dressed Artist on TV"; and "Most Beautiful Face On TV" – the last three obtained through the votes of the readers of TeVeGuía magazine.

These awards reaffirmed Melina's enormous popularity with her fans and distinguished her as a a very strong musical exponent, a fact which is evidenced by the 70,000 copies that were sold of her first album. 1999 also marked her debut on "Romance Del Cumbanchero", a TV special presented by Banco Popular.

Her second production showed itself as a solid musical success from its release, with over 60,000 units sold, which won her the coveted 'Disco De Oro', presented to her during the release ceremony.

With the success obtained with her first two albums Melina became well known outside Puerto Rico, visiting and participating in assorted activities in several citites in Florida, as well as in New York. Melina visited Montevideo and Buenos Aires as well.

Beginning in 2000 Melina León released her third album, entitled "Baño De Luna", under Sony Tropical, which was released successfully at an international level.

With "Baño De Luna" the beautiful blonde made a departure from her well known Merengue persona to return to her origins, as two songs were produced as ballads for the album. Composers Ernesto Patiño, Omar Alfanno, Alejandro Jaén and Marisela Verena collaborated oin this album, which was produced by José Gazmey.

The following year Melina released her fourth album, the second one with Sony, "Corazón De Mujer", backed up by solid promotional support. This production quickly took hold of the radio waves with the single of the same title, and later with the romantic ballad "Qué Será De Ti". The singer had a very important moment in her life in October, when she appeared for the first time, and with formidable success, at the Center of Performing Arts in San Juan.

In 2003 the release of the album "Romántica y Sensual" reaffirmed Melina's presence as a performer. In the process, her strength as a performer and radio presence (as a result of the ballad "Cuando Una Mujer"), was clear evidence that the artist was on her way to transcend the 'labels' that the musical industry had given her.

In that same year Melina showed her acting abilities as one of the main characters of the program 'Abierto 24 Horas', produced by XCS-TV for Puerto Rico's Televicentro. Her appearance received positive reviews because of her phenomenal performance.

Also in 2003 Melina returned to the recording studios to release her album "Melina León", which established the versatility of the young singer. Her first single, "Quiero Ser Tuya", was a hit both in Puerto Rico and the United States, which got Melina the award "Artista Tropical del Año" in "Premio Lo Nuestro A La Música Latina 2005".

To complete her transition, Melina León surprised everyone with her wonderful performance in the reprisal of the musical "La Verdadera Historia de Pedro Navaja", presented at the Centro de Bellas Artes de San Juan and the Broward Center for The Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In 2007, Melina signed an exclusive artist recording agreement with Peer/Southern Productions, and has been working at peermusic's Miami studios on her new album to be released by Apollo Music/Sony BMG, "Vas A Pagar Y Sus Éxitos", for which she co-wrote the title song with well known singer/songwriter Donato Poveda. The album is scheduled for release August 21.

Also, this year Melina has presented two incredibly successful concerts in Puerto Rico including one with Alexandre Pires, and is spokesperson and sponsor of the Casa Protegida Julia De Burgos and Puerto Rico's JobCorps Federal program. Melina has also been chosen to be the first female artist to do the USO tour for the soldiers in the Middle and Far East in November 2007.
