Metric - Synthetica Review

Upon hearing Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? for the first time nearly a decade ago, my first concern was an inability to discern why Metric wasn't more popular. Specifically, why was I only... read more »

Metric's 2005 album, "Live It Out," contained themes of giving up and giving in, but the band's latest effort, "Fantasies," is very much the opposite. In the opener "Help I'm Alive," frontwoman Emily ... read more »

Metric is an indie rock band formed in 1998 at Toronto, Canada and based at various times in Montreal, London, New York City and Los Angeles. The band members are Emily Haines (vocals, synthesizers), James Shaw (guitars), Josh Winstead (bass) and Joules Scott-Key (drums). Initially Metric was a duo made up by Haines and Shaw, then in 2001 Winstead and Scott-Key joined the band. @ Soft Rock Star

Does anyone else here think this song is about prostitution? I think she's reflecting on a culture that values women only for their appearance.
The song appears to be the stream of consciousness of a young woman as she starts work as an escort
/
"Choose the highest bidder", was my answer
When they told me I was up for sale

/

The chorus is what gives it away. Women are told they are "up for sale"; the wage gap and other symptoms of institutionalized oppression create an environment where men so conveniently have access to women who just so happen to be in need of some extra cash in order to have a standard of living comparable to the average white family man. Pretty bad situation to grow up in. Metric's response is bubblegum soft pop rocks, sweet and soft in your mouth, like you don't really know what to do with it.

/
Schoolyard, junior high-style
Bullies have always tried to buy the better girls
But failed. Now, "the cheque is in the mail".
/

She goes on to say that her current situation is similar to junior high. The word 'style' suggests something of a metaphor. She's saying the 'Guys' (the johns) are the bullies grown up. In junior high, the bullies would attempt to gain the favor of girls by giving them (probably stolen) gifts. The girls, the girls she looks up to, won't go out with the bullies who failed to endear themselves with tokens of affection. However, now, as she's a prostitute, these same guys probably are skimping out on payment and saying glib responses like "the cheque is in the mail". I add punctuation because I think it helps my interpretation.

/Not a lot of room to move, but where is my guy?/

She's probably meeting a client at a crowded club. She's his "novelty cheap pink spotlight" - he meets her at a crowded club so that he can get the attention alluded to earlier in the song. Maybe she doesn't have a lot of room to move because of the skinny, tight dress she's in.
