AboutMichael Murphy (born Michael Sean D'Arcy Murphy on September 4, 1986, in Taupo, New Zealand) is the New Zealand Idol runner-up for 2004. Right from the start of the competition, Michael was a hot favourite with the majority of the voters being female and aged between 11-17. He was beaten to the post by Ben Lummis, with whom he formed the closest bond throughout the series.

Michael was persuaded to enter the competition by his mother, Nikki. His father, Sean, along with his younger sister, Suzy and younger brother, Chris, have also been big supporters.

Michael was brought up on a farm in rural Taupo. He is Catholic and first sang at the age of five at midnight Mass. Michael was also one of the top achievers in NCEA Level 2 in 2003 and was deputy head boy in 2004 before Idol, at his high school Taupo-nui-a-Tia College.

Michael lists Lostprophets, The Beatles, Steriogram, Led Zeppelin and Queen as his favourite bands, which shows in his style of music and dress.

He released his first single 'So Damn Beautiful' in late 2004, which was soon followed by his debut album 'No Place To Land'.

Michael Murphy was the vocalist of the Taupo band 'Deadset' prior to being placed second in NZ Idol 2004 and signing a deal with BMG.

More about 'Deadset'...

'Deadset' was a 4 piece rock band from Taupo.

Since forming in 2001, they've played with Elemeno P, Goodshirt, 8 Foot Sativa and Steriogram.

They have competed in the Lion Red Raw Battle of the Bands, have won the Coke Smokefree Rockquest regional final for 2 years in a row, and do various shows around the North Island.

Michael Murphy left Deadset in 2004 after coming second in the first NZ Idol competition and signing a deal with BMG.

5star Fallout

As of 2006, Michael has joined his former 'Deadset' bandmates to form the band 5star Fallout, and is now the lead singer. The band has released a single, "Seasons", that has been well received by Michael's fans, and the ZM radio station, with the song winning the "ZM deathmatch" 7 times in a row.

The five members of 5star Fallout have come from different areas of the country and have different musical backgrounds. Four of our members, John McCaffrey, Peter Williams, Andrew Kerr and Michael Murphy have all been high school friends from Taupo and have been in various bands. Adam Stevenson hails from Greytown and has also been involved in bands throughout school.

Since 5star Fallouts formation this year, they have already performed with such New Zealand acts as Steriogram, 48May, Goodnight Nurse, My Life Story, Mum's Dollar and have upcoming shows with Tadpole. They have already won over many fans that can't get enough of the band. After performing one of their songs 'Seasons' live on the Edge radio station acoustically, the flood of texts and calls that came in overwhelmed the presenters so much that they were forced to replay the song. 5star Fallout are coming your way so look out for them this summer.
