August 2, 1992 : Michel Berger died of a heart attack after a tennis match, in Ramatuelle, France. "With Berger's death, France doesn't lose a legend like Gainsbourg, Yves Montand, Arletty or Coluche. Berger wasn't a myth, neither a monument nor a mediatic phenomenon. If he appeared in Paris-Match, it's only because he married France Gall. There won't be "The Legend of Michel" like there was "The Legend Of Jimmy". However, pop music lost one of the most faithful artists, a shopkeeper maybe, but also a great composer, one of the only Frenchmen [...] to be interested by American & British rock, to wake the French music up when it was dying" Nathalie Petrowski, from the Canadian newspaper Le Devoir, wrote some days after his death. Which legacy did the musician leave ? He got known as a songwriter & producer in the early 70's, produced 2 albums for Véronique Sanson & re-launched Françoise Hardy's career, however, Michel Berger released his debut 7" at 16, "D'Autres Filles". But his career became more successful 10 years later. 1974 : Michel Berger released "Écoute La Musique (Quelle Consolation Fantastique)" after he had met France Gall. His first hit as a singer. Watch the video for "Écoute La Musique" (1974) here. 1975 : his album Que L'Amour Est Bizarre got a mild success. Only 2 songs have been hits : the title-track et "Seras-Tu Là ?". Daniel Balavoine sang "Quand On Arrive En Ville" & Fabienne Thibeault performed "Le Monde Est Stone". Success came & it's still one of the most popular. 2 years later, Michel Berger's album Beauséjour included 3 hits : "Quelques Mots D'Amour", "Celui Qui Chante" & most of all, "La Groupie Du Pianiste", with 468,000 7"s sold. The 33-year-old artist performed at Paris' Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, it was just his golden age. Watch the video for "La Groupie Du Pianiste" (1980) here. 1980 marked a turning point for the musician, who wrote songs for his wife France Gall, with whom he had 2 children. "Il Jouait Du Piano Debout" proves that Michel Berger is known for his own songs but also for those he composed for others. The song quickly became a hit. Watch the video for "Quelques Mots D'Amour" (1980) here. 1985 : Michel Berger sang "Chanter Pour Ceux Qui Sont Loin De Chez Eux", from his album Différences. The song has been covered by Johnny Hallyday & Montserrat Caballé in 1997 & by Lââm the following year. In 1985, Michel wrote & composed Johnny's album Rock'N'Roll Attitude, that included "Quelque Chose De Tennessee". Watch the video for "Chanter Pour Ceux Qui Sont Loin De Chez Eux" (1985) here. 1987 : France Gall released "Ella, Elle L'A", a song that Michel composed as a tribute to jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. The previous year, Michel lost his 2 friends Daniel Balavoine & Coluche, who both died in accidents. Watch the video for "Les Princes Des Villes" (1983) here. 1990 : Michel Berger released his last hit, "Le Paradis Blanc". He also composed another musical with Luc Plamondon, "La Légende De Jimmy", as a tribute to actor James Dean, who died at 24. Watch the video for "Le Paradis Blanc" (1990) here. 2 months before Michel Berger's death, his last album Double Jeu came out. It was his only album in duet with France Gall. Since 1996 & her album France, the singer didn't release anything, except compilations. To know more about Michel Berger, check his site or his Facebook. chartsinfrance.net |
