Michelle Jacquet DeSevren Branch (born July 2 1983) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. Although she lists such classic rock acts as Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix as prime influences, Branch's music is more akin to such modern-day female artists as Lisa Loeb, Alanis Morrisette, and Melissa Etheridge.
Michelle's musical ambitions started early with a constant desire to sing and by age 14, a guitar to begin forming a sound to go along with her words. By 2000, Michelle had recorded a demo (Broken Bracelet) that was sold at shows and led her to an opening-act slot on the Hanson tour. By the beginning of 2001, Michelle had landed a record deal and began recording her first major label LP release.
She signed a record deal with Madonna's record company Maverick while opening for Hanson in December 2000. Her first album under Maverick, The Spirit Room, was released in August 2001 and went onto sell over one million copies in the U.S. The single "Everywhere" became a worldwide top-twenty hit, and was followed by the U.S. top-ten hit "All You Wanted" and the top-forty single "Goodbye to You". Branch was frequently compared (both positively and negatively) to other singer-songwriters like Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, and Vanessa Carlton, who rose to prominence at around the same time as her. In 2002, Branch’s rising success continued as she won won the Viewer's Choice award at the MTV Video Music Awards. The video for "All You Wanted" was also nominated for 2 awards including Best Female Video and Best Pop Video. She was also the lead vocalist on Carlos Santana's song "The Game of Love," which became her first single to reach the U.S. top five; it went on to win her a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration and was also nominated for Best New Artist. In the fall of 2002 she made her debut in movie The Hot Chick with Adam Sandler.
In 2003, she released her second full-length album, Hotel Paper, which became her second RIAA-certified platinum album, and went on #2 on Billboard 200 LP chart, but was met with mixed reviews. The lead single "Are You Happy Now?" became another top-twenty hit for Branch in the U.S., her follow-up single "Breathe" also did moderately well easily entering Top 40 on Billboard Hot 100 Singles charts. The last single"'Til I Get Over You" failed to achieve substantial success as a result of less promotion and without any video treatment.
In 2004 Michelle Branch received her second Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance - Female ("Are You Happy Now?"). Later on in Mexico, on May 23 2004, she married her tour band's bass player, Teddy Landau. She gave birth to a 7lb. 12oz. (3.5kg) baby girl named Owen Isabelle on August 3 2005. She also has formed her country rock band, The Wreckers with long time pal Jessica Harp.
