AboutPiano playing is in Mickey Gilley's blood - he's one of Jerry
Lee Lewis' cousins. Both Gilley and Lewis were born and
raised in a rural area of Louisiana. But unlike his cousin,
Gilley had to struggle before becoming a honky-tonk
superstar.

Mickey Gilley began making music in the '50s recording with
Texas labels, but had little success. This lead to numerous
performances in clubs in Texas during the 1960's, but he
never quite attained national recognition.

All that changed in 1970, when Gilley opened a honky-tonk
club in Pasadena called Gilley's Club. In 1974, he found the
notoriety he had been seeking -- his first number one
country hit "Room Full of Roses." This hit seemed to open the
floodgates and Gilley racked up 39 Top 10 hits with 17 of
them No. 1 songs.

Mickey Gilley's name became well-known in 1978, when his
honky-tonk bar was featured in the movie, Urban Cowboy.
Not only did Gilley have a cameo in the film, but it contained several of his songs.

The '80s were slow for Gilley, culminating in the closure of his
club. Not one to be deterred, Gilley opened a theater in
Branson, Missouri in 1990, which has become a famous
tourist town for country-music lovers.
