| Song lyrics |
I sit and think about the day that you’re gonna die,
Your wrinkled eyes betrayed the joy with which you smiled.
Care to see my reason?
Care to put your life in mine?
Looking at life from the perspective of a boy
Who’s learned to love you but has also learned to grow.
Could we make it better?
Stormy weather
Is so hard to know
Oh, oh, oh – Is there anybody home?
Who will believe me, won’t deceive me, won't try to change me?
Ah, ah, ah – Is there anybody home?
Who wants to have me, just to love me?
Stuck in the middle.
I look at you,
You look at me,
We bite each other.
And with your bitter words
You kick me in the gutter.
But my troops are bigger than yours
You’ll never stand my fight.
Ours is family that’s based upon tradition
But with my careless words I tread upon your vision.
Are five kids better than one
Who doesn't lie to become?
Oh, oh, oh – Is there anybody home?
Who will believe me, won’t deceive me, won't try to change me?
Ah, ah, ah – Is there anybody home?
Who wants to have me, just to love me?
Stuck in the middle.
Yea...Yea...Yea...
This is just who I am
This ain’t a greater plan to break your heart
Over me
I know that what I’ve started
Means that when we have parted
I can live in honesty
Oh, oh, oh – Is there anybody home?
Who will believe me, won’t deceive me, won't try to change me ?
Ah, ah, ah – Is there anybody home?
Who wants to have me, just to love me?
Stuck in the middle,
Stuck in the middle,
Stuck in the middle,
Stuck in the middle

I actually think this song is about being someone who not everyone accepts; so having conflict within themselves and with everyone else as a result. I think he is saying these lyrics to his parents, and the opening line is not meant to be cynical - like he can't wait for their death- but more like he has literally been thinking about how painful it will be to see them gone (and perhaps how he wants this conflict to be resolved before then). He notices their rinkled faces, which symbolizes past endurances and one would expect someone with such "rinkled eyes" to be bitter but instead he sees the joy and hapiness; it is almost endeering. He sees how strong they are to have endured struggles of the past but still find joy in life and maybe also how this conflict is nothing they can not conquer (btw past struggle would be refering to what we know about his family, the war and the multiple uprootings). There is a rumour floating around that Mika is homosexual, and unfortunately STILL within society that is seen as a negative thing which might be why if he is, he is holding back from saying so for the sake of his career. The ones who would need to know, do know, and this song is about telling them (specifically his parents)-- and if it is not homosexuality, than it could be anything, like perhaps how he is as a musician or a person...at some point he had a discussion with them about who he is and it resulted in them speaking about the family name, traditions and so on. The term "stuck in the middle" would refer to how he feels conflicted between being the person that he is and being the person that he "should" be just to make everyone happy. Anyway, this is just my interpretation of the song, I could be very wrong. On a side note, his mother is Lebanese, born and raised, she must me able to sympathize with her son seeing as though she married an American -- that is definetely NOT tradition in Lebanon. My mother was scrutanized for it, and I wouldn't be surprised if his mother was as well. Just an observation. Finally, if my interpretation (no pun intended!) of this song is correct then it would justify Mika's idea of how music makes revealing bad information easier and let's people be more accepting of the news. | 29-06-2007 22:43 Javelina | 3 posts

Wow, kitzbella, you summed up my feelings on the meaning of this song exactly.
I love this song, it's my favorite on the album. Not only because of the great (and cryptic) lyrics, but because of the beat/instruments. I can't help but sing along when the chorus starts. | 28-01-2008 23:12 Kloram333 | 1 posts

Every person can interprit a good song like this in thier own way ( which is one of the reasons why this song is so good). I personally think that this song is about being "stuck" between your beliefs and your Lover( and thier beliefs). I think that the speaker doesn't want to settle down and have kids but his lover does. The speaker doesnt think that it is important to the relationship to kids or to be legally wed, but thinks that just bieng in love is enough. The speaker questions if this disagreement will tear the couple apart and doesn't want to have to breakup with his lover but feels he must for his own beliefs.
And remeber Mika doesn't always write songs about himself, he sometimes writes about other's stories/feelings
