AboutBorn Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992, in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. She was nicknamed 'Smiley' due to her infectious baby smile which was later changed to the name the public knows her by today...
Miley Cyrus developed a love for the stage after watching her dad, country singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus, perform. After appearing as an extra in her dad's television projects, Cyrus got her first chance to act opposite him in a recurring role on the television series "Doc." Since then, she guest-starred on "Love Boat: The Next Wave" and appeared in the Tim Burton film "Big Fish."

Growing up with music around her, Miley's talents also followed in her father's footsteps as she too wrote her own music, playing guitar and singing. She mentioned growing up in numerous early interviews that her musical influences are pop singers Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff and Ashlee Simpson.

To better her chances of becoming discovered as a "star", an actress and a singer, Miley relocated to Los Angeles from Nashville with her parents and siblings (sisters Brandi and Noah and brothers Trace and Braison). This led to the Cyrus family leaving their seven horses, three dogs and two cats behind under her grandmother's care - one of the most difficult adjustments for Cyrus who enjoyed braiding the horses' tails at the time.

Around 2004, at age 12, after many callbacks and auditions - Miley landed her major role in Hannah Montana [2006] (tv show).
The show was based on a teen girl named Miley Stewart who lived a double life as a pop star under the alter-ego name of Hannah Montana. The show ran from March 26, 2006, to January 16, 2011, on Disney Channel.

Due to the immediate success of "Hannah Montana", Cyrus officially recorded songs that were featured in the show. Released on October 24, 2006, by Walt Disney Records who helped establish her as a then "teen idol", the show's debut soundtrack perfectly titled, Hannah Montana [2006], reached #1 on the US Billboard 200 and Soundtrack Albums charts; with the singles - The Best Of Both Worlds, Who Said, If We Were A Movie) and The Other Side Of Me.

The album's re-issued version had songs like I Got Nerve, Pumpin' Up The Party, Just Like You land in the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

In 2007, the second HM soundtrack titled - Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus [2007] was released on June 26, 2007, which showcased more on Miley's own music abilities with songwriting credits. It too hit #1 on both the US Billboard 200 and Soundtrack Albums charts collectively with Nobody's Perfect, the first single off the album peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Despite not releasing official follow-up singles, several tracks from the soundtrack charted in the US. Life's What You Make It was the highest-peaking track from the record, having entered the chart at #25. Rock Star, Make Some Noise), and True Friend charted in the lower ends of the Billboard Hot 100, having respectively reached numbers 81, 92, and 99.

That same year, Cyrus signed with Hollywood Records to pursue a solo career outside of her Disney character.

Throughout 2008, Miley was kept busy while embarking on "The Best of Both Worlds Tour". The tour eventually turned into a high-grossing concert film - Hannah Montana: Best Of Both Worlds Concert that was released on March 11, 2008. She also legalised her name to Miley Ray Cyrus, with the middle name 'Ray' just like her father and as a homage to her late grandfather.

In April 2008, she released her first solo album, Breakout, which experienced international success and she was included in Time magazine's 2008 Top 100.

That year, she lent her voice of "Penny" in the animated film "Bolt". Bolt's theme song, I Thought I Lost You a duet with her co-star John Travolta, earned her a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
And was in the middle of filming, reprising the role of Miley in Hannah Montana: The Movie.

And just like her predecessor "Hannah Montana" albums, a soundtrack was released exclusively for the movie on March 24, 2009, titled - Hannah Montana: The Movie [Soundtrack]. It introduced her to new audiences within the country and adult contemporary markets. The movie was officially released on April 10, 2009.
The Hannah Montana 3 album that tied into the third season of HM came out on July 6, 2009.

On August 28, 2009, Miley began to cultivate an adult image with the release of The Time Of Our Lives, an EP that presented a more mainstream pop sound. The song Party In The U.S.A. that was written by Jessie J, became Cyrus' best-selling effort up to that point, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also resulted as one of the best-selling singles in the US and Hollywood Records' best- and fastest-selling single.

The second and final single released from the EP was When I Look At You. It was used to promote The Last Song, a 2010 coming-of-age drama film in which Cyrus starred. The single appeared in the Top 20 of charts in Australia and the US. Cyrus embarked on her first world tour, the Wonder World Tour, to promote the EP in late 2009.

While filming "The Last Song", she met her then Australian boyfriend to ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. They dated for almost a decade.

In 2010, Cyrus presented a new dance-pop sound with the music video and lyrics of the album's title and lead single, Can't Be Tamed which portrayed a more sexualized image for the entertainer. It peaked at #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was described as "scandalous" for her younger audience has grown up with her HM image.
Who Owns My Heart, the second and final single of the album was only released and charted in European countries such as Germany (#24) and Austria (#35). The song was deemed as "dull and faceless" according to critics.

The album Can't Be Tamed was released on June 18, 2010, to mixed to unfavourable reviews - critics citing the album as over-processed vocally with a lack of musical focus and a failure to fully establish Cyrus' maturing public image. The album did chart well internationally in the Top 10 in countries Australia, Canada and UK. This was also the last album by Cyrus that was released under her label Hollywood Records contract.

Miley's more provocative image continued on after her HM days and after taking a three-year break from music to focus on acting projects, she eventually made her comeback, signing with RCA Records and releasing Bangerz on September 30, 2013.
This album still received mixed reviews but was much better compared to her last record in terms of effort and was praised for its overall production and originality, as well as crediting Cyrus' music evolution. It debuted at #1 in the US including multiple countries internationally in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Mexico, Norway, Scotland and UK.

The first single, We Can't Stop peaked at #2 on US Billboard Hot 100. With 10.7 million views of its accompanying music video, it briefly held the Vevo record for the most views in 24 hours, before being surpassed by Best Song Ever by One Direction. It was also the fastest video to reach 100 million views, having done so in 37 days.

In 2015, Cyrus released her independently experimental EP titled Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz.

Two years later, on May 11, 2017, she changed her tune returning to her country-pop roots, paying homage of where she felt like she belonged with the lead single, Malibu. In September, Cyrus' sixth studio album, Younger Now came out (the title track was the second and last single to be played). This would end up being her shortest album era in her discography with little promotion and received mixed reviews from critics stating "lack of substance."

After taking another two year hiatus, Miley began working on a resurgence project which resulted in SHE IS COMING [EP] [2019] (debuted at #5 on the US Billboard 200). The only single released from it was Mother's Daughter. The song's music video even won two MTV Music awards in 2020.

In late 2020, Cyrus took to her strengths with her love of rock/disco influences with the album, Plastic Hearts (her last project signed to RCA Records). It scored higher than her previous efforts, generating positive reviews from critics and debuted at #2 on US Billboard 200. The album had three singles which were Midnight Sky, Prisoner with Dua Lipa and Angels Like You.

In 2021, Miley signed with Columbia and the following year, a live album made for the fans titled ATTENTION: MILEY LIVE was released. It included Cyrus' well known tracks in a setlist recorded during her concert at Super Bowl Music Fest in February 2022. Collectively this marked how versatile Cyrus' voice has been throughout her career with a wide range of musical genres. Like there's nothing she can't do as an artist.
