| Song lyrics |
Everything that keeps me together is falling apart, I've got
this thing that I consider my only art of fucking people over
My boss just quit the job says he's goin out to find blind
spots and he'll do it
The 3rd Planet is sure that they're being watched by an
eye in the sky that can't be stopped
When you get to the promise land your gonna shake that
eyes hand
Your heart felt good it was drippin pitch and made of wood
And your hands and knees felt cold and wet on the grass to me
Well, outside naked, shiverin' looking blue, from the cold
sunlight that's reflected off the moon
Baby come angels fly around you, reminding you we used
to be three and not just two
And that's how the world began
And that's how the world will end
Well, a third had just been made and we were swimming in the
water, didn't know then was it a son was it a daughter
When it occurred to me that the animals are swimming
around in the water in the oceans in our bodies and
another had been found another ocean on the planet
given that our blood is just like the Atlantic
And how
The universe is shaped exactly like the earth if you go
straight long enough you'll end up where you were

Ya'll are idiots! hammy8673: Of course this song has a meaning. Do you think Isaak just pulled it out of his ass? And it's not just a coke song either, guldan. The whole idea of Isaak's lyrics (and this is in every one of his songs, not just this one) is that you interpret your own meaning. When he writes a song it means one thing to him but it means something different to each person who hears it. Some people are just too stupid and can't think for themselves. That's why they don't appreciate Modest Mouse. They can't think for themselves so they don't understand lyrics that are not spelled out for them in black and white. | 18-05-2005 06:21 Kleinster | 3 posts
| Okay, so youandyourmom was right, you are all idiots, but he was wrong because he didn't really point out why. First of all, the song does have a meaning, what ever you take out of it. Second of all, I really doubt that said meaning has much to do with cocaine. The first part of this song(like many of their others) is relgious. "The third planet is surely their being watched by and eye in the sky...promised land..." see that? Also, it obviously talks alot about the creation story, "reminds you of when you used to be three and not just two" means what it used to be like before god left Adam and Eve and became far less personal. Okay, this is the first part, because it talks about the beginning of human civilization and awarness. The second part is about the realitiveness of size, refering to the animals swimming in his blood (virsuses, germs), and to the universe, for how much bigger it is, is still like the earth. He then ties it in to himself, saying that for all that knowledge of how human awarness started, and for all the size of the universe, and it's similarities to our bodies, it's all about what you do with this knowledge. " I got this thing that i consider my only art of f--king people over." | 31-07-2005 05:55 bunckel | 1 posts

OK you have to be pretty oblivious to not know the meaning.
It's about him and his gf and she looks nervous because she was cheating on him "what used to be three and now is two" and now shes pregnant "didnt know then was it a son was it a daughter" and the angels in her mind were reminding her of it and the guy is obviously depressed (Isaac seems very depressed a lot) and hes talking about how the relationship is goign nowhere (The universe is shaped exactly like the earth if you go
straight long enough you'll end up where you were)
So thats the meaning of the song and excuse my childish grammar because I'm just like in shock because I cant believe noone understood it. | 21-10-2005 07:44 ItsAllNiceOnIce | 3 posts

Its really not necessary for everyone to get mad here. interpret whatever you want. it is not "obviously about a relationship where he's cheating" to me, it is obviously about abortion. "baby cum angles fly around you reminding you we used to be three and now just two.... didnt know then was it a son was it a daughter."
the world begins through sex, and will end through abortion... hahaha | 21-10-2005 09:12 _AdreNaliN_ | 2,670 posts

It sounds best live, I do agree sometimes even music can be nonsubjective like art, since music ia an art^^
I think it sounds like the baby it's talking about died before birth, or maybe this song does have a deeper metephoric meaning, it is a beautiful song though. | 27-01-2006 00:08 rich5269er | 2 posts

i think modest mouse is completely amazing....about the meaning of their songs i know they are hard to understand and sometimes dont even have a meaning....but you have to remember the band was on an acid trip comming of their songs....which is totally awesome | 03-05-2006 23:42 HippieLovee | 2 posts

Yes, I would agree with the other people who called you idiots. What's the point of loving a song when you can't grasp meaning on your own terms. You like the song because the band did acid? How lame are you? People like you annoy me more than anything. But anyways, enough of that. I agree with Kleinster's interpretation. | 12-08-2006 20:43 lovely_other1 | 19 posts
| first of all...modest mouse fuking rocks.
second of all...no ones an idiot. just because people cant write out the meaning of this song in this little square given to us doesnt mean they are idiots. just the music itself is meaning and left to your own interpretation. just making people think is part of the meaning and it shows how different everyone is that they interpret it in so many different ways. but no matter how this song affects you i think we all can agree that it means a lot to ourselves individually. | 19-08-2006 00:30 LordSesshomaru | 81 posts

Amazing song, but things to be resolved:
However you see it, you interpret it some different way then someone else, therefore different meanings are for everyone..
we have no definitive proof of what this song is about because he didn't tell us.
it was meant to be interpreted as how you wish, hence him not commenting.
its nothing to bicker over, mm is amazing and we should leave it at that..
my 2 cents | 05-10-2006 02:00 araval21 | 1 posts
| The point has been made several times that there are multiple interpretations, which I completely agree with. However, the important thing is that if there is no evidence in the lines to make your argument plausible, then go away. However, if there is a viable connection between your theory and lines, I love each and every one about all of these songs. Indeed it is what I love about Modest Mouse. Secondly, to those of you who are applauding the song because of the cocaine and acid implications, nobody respects what you have to say. Lastly, regarding the interpretation of the lines regarding the three becoming two, a thought I've never been able to shake is the idea of Judith. Now I know the three of them were never really hanging out, but considering the idea that they are the trio, it is interesting to think who the "two" may be... | 27-03-2007 06:17 Musicool2 | 6 posts
