AboutNiomi Daley, 1981, London, England. Winning the Mercury Music Prize in 2002 confirmed that Niomi Daley aka Ms. Dynamite had completed her remarkable passage into the hearts of the British public and press. Quite an achievement for a level headed woman of 21 who had only been performing in front of crowds for three years.
Daley was raised in north London with nine brothers and sisters on a musical diet of roots, reggae and soul, and once described her own vocals as "like a cat being thrown off a building". She began chatting in a live environment at raves, initially as a joke with friends from a London pirate radio station. Having passed on the opportunity to study anthropology, Ms. Dynamite's debut release, "Booo!", was recorded with garage luminary Sticky. The track originated on Jason Kaye's Social Circles label but swiftly graduated to London Records. Having enjoyed several months success on the club scene, the single finally broke into the UK Top 20 in May 2001.
Ms. Dynamite quickly gained a reputation as a feisty yet approachable person, and grew up alongside her friends in So Solid Crew, themselves enjoying a meteoric rise. She became the darling of the UK broadsheet newspapers and made a name for herself at Channel 4 television, fronting their Flava show.
The album A Little Deeper was released in March 2002 to great acclaim, which also majored on a comparison between Ms. Dynamite and US singer Lauryn Hill. There are a number of similarities between the two, the aching vocals of "Watch Over Them" and the tenderness of "Brother" for instance. A memorable track on the album was "It Takes More", its silky smooth R&B chorus tinged with melodica and complementing sharply observed verses, where Ms. Dynamite raps "tell me how many Africans died for the baguettes on your Rolex". Other hit singles from A Little Deeper included "Now U Want My Love" and the distinctive "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee", the latter featuring a glockenspiel and a shriller vocal tone. Ms. Dynamite also participated on Ed's Guest List, the debut album from garage producer Ed Case. Her Mercury Prize was followed by three successes at the British MOBO awards of 2002, confirmation that she was one of the hottest new UK talents of the year.
