Come To Life Review

HAVING a global smash hit on her very first album has probably hurt Natalie Imbruglia more than it has helped her. Her debut single Torn took the world by storm in 1997, propelling her album Left of the Middle to sales of over six million worldwide. Since then, Imbruglia has struggled to match the phenomenal success of her maiden effort, leading to her being unfairly labelled as a one-hit wonder.

It’s not that her other albums – 2001’s White Lily Islands and 2005’s Counting Down the Days – were bad (in fact, they both had some really good songs. The problem was that there wasn’t a single song in them that could match the sheer pop brilliance of Torn, which combined a glorious melody with Imbruglia’s tormented, heartbreaking delivery).

With her fourth album Come to Life, Imbruglia returns with a straightforward pop album consisting of an equal mix of slow ballads and pop dance numbers – a formula that doesn’t really stray far from her past albums.

Credit to her for sticking with what she does best, singing songs that emphasise melody over over-production, and adequately underlining the somewhat anguished, battle-weary sound of her vocals.

The slower numbers are the highlights of this album, especially the acoustic Scars, the almost serene Lukas (which starts off sounding a little like Susanne Vega’s Luka, oddly enough), and the deceptively-titled Fun.

It’s when the songs venture into faster tempos that the album suffers, especially the dance-tinged numbers like Want and Cameo, which make her sound like a Kylie-wannabe. Of the faster tracks, the uplifting Twenty stands out, mostly because it doesn’t try to drown out Imbruglia’s voice with pounding dance beats.

All in all, this is a decent comeback for Imbruglia, and proves that 12 years after Torn, there is still life in her career yet.
