Nelly Embraces Her Roots with Spanish Album

From “I’m Like a Bird” to “estoy como un pájaro? ” BC native and sexy mama Nelly Furtado is making the switch from music to música with a new album of Spanish songs, reports MTV News.

Furtado, who grew up speaking Portuguese and learned Spanish in high school, will follow in the footsteps of Christina Aguilera, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, who have all recorded in Spanish.

“I’m in the midst of recording a Latin album,” Furtado revealed to MTV. “It’s like, ‘Wow, I’m writing a song in Spanish.’ It’s really bizarre, but really great.”

Though Furtado has sung a few Spanish songs already (“Te Busqué” and “No Hay Igual” on Loose) this is the first time she’ll be writing songs from scratch en Español.

“I feel like a little kid again, because it’s a whole new language,” she said. “And I can’t translate poetically yet. But Latin languages come easy to me. When I sing in them, it feels natural. It feels organic. I love rapping in Spanish, I love singing in Spanish. It just feels so good.”

On the new album, Furtado plans to include all of her previous Spanish songs, translations of some of her older tracks, a few original new songs and perhaps a cover.

Whoa, Nelly! Thanks for doing something to remind us why we once respected you – like that time you passed up $500,000 to pose nude in Playboy. It’s just too bad that you’re also broadcasting some not-so-hot messages, like your new found skankiness – ahem, promiscuousness – and your recent abandonment, until now, of your Portuguese roots.

"and your recent abandonment, until now, of your Portuguese roots."

I don't understand that statement. Until now? She's going to record in SPANISH, right? Not in Portuguese...
