Not Without a Fight Review

New Found Glory couldn't have picked a worse time to drop a new album from a new label. Amid the buzz behind the upcoming Green Day album and the monumental hype surrounding Blink 182's reunion, the pop-punk blah-blah-blah mills are working overtime. The pop-punk kids hope is the future, and a short-term future it is: After years of wait, the giants return this summer.
In that environment, New Found Glory's sure to slide between the cracks, and Not Without a Fight doesn't do much to buck those expectations. The pop-punk act returns with workmanlike persistence for its seventh studio album and Not Without a Fight bears all the hallmarks of the NFG most of us have grown to love, hate or mostly ignore. The act's hardcore roots bubble up in miniature breakdowns and the rocket-speed tempos, but Jordan Pundik's vocals tip ever closer to the singsong over-performance of bands like Fall Out Boy, while Blink's own Mark Hoppus provides enough super-shine production to tip New Found Glory back into its radio-chasing form.
No surprises there. New Found Glory's always struggled through a limbo halfway between pop punk sugar and hardcore muscle, and Not Without a Fight continues to force the band in its disingenuous dual direction. It's an enforced truce of the band's influences -- like usual. Although the act musters a little more energy than on its past couple albums, it's tough to leave Not Without a Fight without feeling like the band's dressing up pop-punk sugar in hardcore riffs. "Right Where We Left Off" opens the album on its most direct track, though Pundik's vocals curse the act with an association with mall-punk that's inescapable. "47" and "I'll Never Love Again" muster some riffs that, underneath the too-even production and the silly teenage-angst love lyrics, could have been heavy hitters in another time, another place or another universe. "Heartless at Best" brings tempos down and tosses an acoustic guitar into the mix, the perfect second-single cut, though one that leaves the act's biggest weapon -- its big-gun riffs -- out of the mix.
The sun's setting on the pop-punk era, and acts have to scrap for their share of attention. Blink and Green Day are already hogging most of the limited share right now. New Found Glory's Not Without a Fight isn't going to unseat the rumor mill and help the band return to its former radio-rock glories. |
