Polly wants a cracker
Think I should get off her first Think she wants some water To put out the blow torch Isn't me Have a seat Let me clip Dirty wings Let me take a ride Hurt yourself Want some help Help myself Got some rope Have been told Promise you Have been true Let me take a ride Hurt yourself* Want some help Help myself* Polly wants a cracker Maybe she would like some food She asked me to untie her A chase would be nice for a few Isn't me Have a seat Let me clip Dirty wings Let me take a ride Hurt yourself Want some help Help myself Got some rope Have been told Promise you Have been true Let me take a ride Hurt yourself Want some help Help myself Polly said Polly says her back hurts She's just as bored as me She caught me off my guard Amazes me the will of instinct Isn't me Have a seat Let me clip Dirty wings Let me take a ride Hurt yourself Want some help Help myself Got some rope Have been told Promise you Have been true Let me take a ride Hurt yourself Want some help Help myself (Note: This is how they sing it on the Unplugged version) |

1 posts | "In the VH1 Classic Albums documentary about Nevermind, bass player Krist Novoselic remembers Kurt Cobain writing "Polly" after reading a newspaper article about the abduction, torture, and rape of a 14 year old girl who had just finished attending a rock show in Tacoma, Washington."

66 posts | Yeah, this song is about rape. And yeah, it's kind of awesome. In order for a song to be anti anything, it doesn't necessarily have to say it clearly. To think that Kurt would sing a song glorifying rape is not something I'd believe.
My interpretation: It highlights the apathy that the rapist has for the act. He doesn't necesarily see it as violent because to him it's not. It's not even fun. he tries to make himself believe that he cares about her; if he doesnt'he's a monster. He tries to tell himself that she's a co-participant for the same reason. No, he's not "out of his mind". He thinks he's being logical. Whether it's obviously violent or it resembles "normal" sex, rape is still rape. He's just trying to justify the act away by pretending to care. |

13 posts | The song is not really anti-rape. It's written from the point of view of a guy who is in the process of brutally raping a girl. The song also shows that the rapist isn't entirely out of his mind because he included lines like 'she's just as bored as me' and 'maybe she wants some water'. |

Fascinating, somewhat unnerving tale of rape and sexual obsession. |
